Arctica chiller ?'s

Hey. i just inherited a JBL Arctica 1/10hp chiller. yay me!

currently my return pump is a QuietOne1200 rated at 296, which OK flow at 4ft head. would it be wise to upgrade my gph??
i dont know how much pressure you lose with a chiller....
info says flow rate for the chiller is 240gph... is that a max or min??

it also didnt come with any hose connectors...where do i get replacement parts??

I believe 240 GPH is the min for flow throw a chiller. You might want to try JBJ's website for parts.

The specific chiller should have a flow range. You should adhere to flow within that range. Contact the manufacturer if the flow specs arent listed on the site or the manual. You usually dont lose that much flow through a chiller but depends on the design of the heat exchanger housing/resevoir.

thanx. yea i believe 240 would be the min, since its rated up to 90g. which is diff more than a 240gph return.

JBJ doesnt give a range, they just state 240 GPH for flow. I would consider this the target rate but I wouldnt go much over it or much under it.
Two basic designs of inline chillers ... one uses colder heat exchanger temperatures and higher flow rates.
The other utilizes lower flow rates because the coil temps arent as low.

There are some 1/10 hp chillers with higher flow rates than the JBJ so they are apparently one of the designs that trades higher coil temps. for lower flow rates.
In other words ... stay as close to 240 gph through the chiller for efficient cooling.

You can measure the flow rate without a meter. You can time how long it takes to fill a 1 gallon container (or any container of know volume). For example, if you are running a pump through the chiller and then up to one outlet into the tank, time how long it takes for the flow out that outlet to fill the 1 gallon container. The do the math ... if it fills it in 20 seconds then you know you have 3 gallons per minute of 180 gallons per hour ... etc.

If you look at Marine Depot info, they give a min/max of 240/960. I use a Mag 7 on my JBJ 75

Hmmm ... I see that. In the PDF on the JBJ site it just states 240, no min or max. Seems like 960 GPH would be an awful lot of flow for a 1/10 HP. 240 - 960 would seem like a pretty wide range for a 1/10 which isnt a very powerful chiller.

Personally, I would contact JBJ to make sure if the range on the MD site is correct ... or better yet, just find out what JBJ recommends for flow for the OP's system with that specific chiller.
