I've read if you catch em with a net, it will damage them
Mine doesn't have them tho...
Or is that just plain Maroons?

Did his get busted off or what?

The cheek spines are characteristic of all members of the genus Premnas, of which the gold stripe is ofcourse a member. The spines will be present on all Premnas anemonefish, and is also a distinguishing feature between the genus Amphiprion and Premnas (although they're very easy to tell apart anyway). Those cheek spines lead to the common name "Spinecheek Clownfish" although this name is not nearly as popular as "Maroon Clownfish".

As a sidenote: if memory serves Premnas translated to english means something along the lines of "spinelip" or "spinecheek" although I could be incorrect.

Don't worry too much about netting them. Just be careful, as with all fish. Hope that helped

some Maroons have 2 spines some have one spine and some people think there are actually two premnas species 2 spine and 1 spine maroons

thanks for the info.
I'm still confused about why mine doesn't have them. Any ideas?

'Gold Stripe Spinecheek' sounds kinda cool
