recently i've received a shipment of marine fish . the fish was in good and healthy, active condition upon arrival. but the next day , they become inactive and started to die.

so i was hoping to get some opinions how to handling the fish when they arrive. are there any steps should be taken during the process of transferring the fishes to the tank?

thank you:fun4:

All fish should have an acclimation period to your water and your temp. Should never just throw them in.

float the bag for 30 mins tops for temp acclimation and then make sure the salinity in the bag is higher than the tank that the fish are going into and dump. Drip acclimating is only reserved for fish going into higher salinity than in the bag. Then special precautions need to be taken to makes sure fish don't die from the ammonia in the bag

+1 they dies from ammonia poisoning. Where did you buy them from?

Word.

Dumping them into lower SG water works well, as Fish can handle a reasonable DROP in salinity well vs. dumping them into water with higher SG.

Yep. I have put fish into hypo conditions from 1.026 in less than 2 hrs

I've dropped fish from 1.020 into 1.026 without acclimatization to no ill effect.
I've also moved fish from 1.026 to 1.009 without more than a temperature acclimatization and the fish didn't seem to mind it.
I've also moved fish from one tank to another without the slightest acclimatization in emergency situations.

Salinity changes is something many fish are exposed to on daily basis and they usually handle it well.
Just imagine a tide pool that bakes in the sun and the wind further accelerating the evaporation. A few hours later the water returns and the salinity and temperature drop back to ocean levels.
The opposite can happen in lagoons during strong rainfalls.

Now, with fish you got via mail order you want to be a bit more gentle, but in general, the sooner you get them into clean water the better.

i got them from philipines and indonesia. i just pour them directly into the tank.
after the acclimatization, should i add on some medication into the tank?

do you add medication into the tank after placing the new fish? to prevent any disease or illness of the fish?

Besides a formalin bath upon arrival I don't do any preventive treatments. New fish go into an observation QT for 8 weeks and only treated when needed.

i skipped the step ( formalin bath ). currently im using mirobe-lift and Artemiss for the new fish in the tank. hopefully their condition can become better.

My advice to you is to research how to do things properly BEFORE you do them. Research, prepare, proceed. You are going to kill a lot of fish unless you do a lot more research and learning about this hobby.

You should let the bag float in your main tank for at least 30min-1 hour so that the water temperature in the bag is the same with the water from your tank. Then put the bag into the a bucket or some sort of bucket and do drip acclimation. So that the ph, and other element are the same. You can put straight into the main tank or QT. What I do is that I put the fishes into ro/di water for 15-30 min to kill some hitchike/parasite then I put it into the tank.

Dump fish and water into a strainer ..... pick up fish by the tail and flick a few times to dislodge any parasites ..... toss into tank .....
