Perhaps someone can help me. I have had enough with Beckett skimmers and how sensitive they are to just about everything and have decided to go with ASM G5 Skimmer.

I havent purchased a skimmer in about 2 years and wondered if someone could explain the Recirc mod and the benifits it brings? Does it increase the capacity of the skimmer? Would it make sense on the G5 that already has 2 Sedra 9000 pumps?

Thanks
Steve

The re-circ mod will increase the dwell time of the water thus increasing the skimmers capacity to remove waste. Check out the ASM website for more info...also....you can not go wrong with this skimmer.....the G3 with a Re-Circ/Gate Valve/and feed pump runs about $350.00 .....Euro Reef's similar model runs over $850. From what I read the euro uses a little heavier/stout plastic but is it worth $500.00 more....I didn't think so :)

I had my G3 for almost a week now and it is throwing the nastiest stuff out ....

Good luck with your decision.

Ron

So how often does everyone clean their skimmmer? Just trying to get an idea how often I should clean mine....

Thanks for your feedback :)

For anyone using Ozone on your ASM Skimmer .......I did a mod. on my G3 that has been running for thee weeks and seems to be doing great.....I put a 1/4" Y branch into the line going to the Venturi.....on one side of the Y I tied in my ozone generator....on the other side I ran a hose up to my collection cup and tapped a 1/4" hose barb x thread 90 into the cap....I now have no ozone escaping for my cup....This works great !!

Same thing I mentioned at the top of this page... only you described it much better ;)

I would only add that I used a low pressure/low vac ozone proof check valve to keep the ozone from ever getting injected back into the collection cup. I also only use ozone proof Tees (or Y's) since these crumble over time.

Are ya'll saying that the only air into your skimmer is coming from the Ozonizer and the skimmer cup?

I did crank back the Luft to 1.5 and I smelled no ozone today.

I would also think that you will lose the benift of fresh o2 getting into the tank water. Especially if you run your air intake outside.

My orp did maintain but get this............the unit came on a few minutes ago and I smell ozone. I swear these GenX units are unstable. Sometimes it just produces more....its the only thing I can think of.

I have been reading Randy and am thinking about switching to an ozone generator but would like to try the cup thing. Maybe I'll add a second T...???...or drill the hole and put GAC on top of it.

Only a small portion of the air is recycled and/or pulled from the ozone generator. My skimmer is pulling air from both the generator and a DIY carbon air filter can.

I've tried to read through this whole thing, but wow its huge. Does anyone run their ASM without any mods. I've got an AGA stand with a 20L sump divided into 3 sections. My point is I have very little room to play with and I really suck with DIY projects (time is a huge factor). I'm just wondering how these things work w/o mods and does anyone have a similar setup?

There are a few guys here in our local club that run their G3's with no without the recirc mod and they do great as I have seen with my own eyes, however I think just about everyone ends up doing the gate valve mod. If you're limited on space I wouldn't worry about the recirc mod you will be just fine with out it. There is also many different ways to do the gate valve mod and some don't take very much room so I would look at that one hard before giving up on it.

I've just put my G3 together last weekend and has been pulling out crap after the 3rd day. Yes, i've ordered it with a recirc and a feed mod. I did not order the gate valve mod from ASMSkimmer.com because I've individually bought them my self from OSH for no more that $13, this includes the gate valve, the tee slip and all vs $38 from them.

I think you running the G3's with the recirc mod is the best thing you can do for your skimmer.

Does your ASM with gate valve mod tend to overflow after feeding? I must tweek gate for half hour or so till it calms down.

Here's my G3 in action after 5 days out of the box. I 'broke it in' by running it for 24 hours in a vinegar and fresh water bath before I added it to my system.

Great Idea, I'm going to do this when I get my RC-180 this Mon.

John, In your picture you have the timer over the sump and next to the skimmer. Be careful because the skimmer may overflow causing a short. I had the same setup until my LFS saw it and HIGHLY recommended I move the open electric items to the top of the tank. I know it does not look as good but in the long run you may save your self lots of heartache!

Good luck

Simon
