Does your ASM with gate valve mod tend to overflow after feeding? I must tweek gate for half hour or so till it calms down.

Mine doesn't but I don't feed heavy.

On the topic of electrical shorts, if you must keep your power strips in the near vacinity be sure to protect any open outlets. Because of the abundance of moist air around the sump area this can slowly build up in your open outlets. I bought some of those plastic child proof plug protectors that keep kids from sticking stuff into electrical sockets. They work great at keeping the contacts dry. Also acts as insurance in case I had to splash anything near these outlets.

I seem to have a restart problem whenever I take my pump apart to clean it. I've included a picture of the impellor for referance below. Are the two black pieces on either end of the impellor supposed to spin freely around the impellor shaft or be permenantly attached? Mine are usually stuck into either the pump or the plastic piece you remove to access the imepllor. Is that normal or anything I can do to prevent the imepllor from sticking after cleaning?

I wasn't planning on doing the gate valve mod, just the recirculation mod.

what parts do I need for a gate valve mod? I have limited space as well.

WELL I DID IT. I bit the bullet and bought an ASM G6 today for my 265 gallon reef (450 gallons total capacity).

It arrives in about a week, I will be sure to post some feedback.

Well I'm in the club just got my G4X!!!! one question willl a ball valve work like a gate valve when I do the gate valve mod?

It will work - just not as accuratly. Heck, raising the riser tube works, just not as accuratly. I would bet that you could find the sweet spot with the riser and a ball valve. Again, just not as easilly as with a gate valve.

No the impellor spins around the white rod. Those black rubber only hold it in place.

I've played with that idea on my head and at HD and OSH. It was alot easier to adjust with a gate valve vs a ball valve. Besides, a gate valve was only $10 for 1.25" vs a $6.00 1.25" gate valve.

Also, it only takes one hand to turn a gate valve. On a ball, you'll probably need both hands to support and turn the ball valve.

Soak the impeller and ceramic chaft in white vinegar overnight (not the rubber ends). If it still has problems then it's your impeller going out. There's a chance that the ceramic shaft spun in the rubber pieces and let the magnets rub. Might as well order one before it leaves you stranded. I had the same problem, and then one day I noticed my tank temp shoot up 5 degrees. The impeller had siezed. I found the best price through Customaquatic.com but check around.

Im new to RC but been at Nano-Reef for a longtime. Would it be worth the cash to upgrade my CSS 65 to a ASM G1X with ricirc. mod? Would be about 350$ for me to spend on the skimmer and sump. Do you think the CSS could keep up with a bioload of 6 fish in a 29gallon. The tank has been set up for six months without fish. Are their any mods worth doing to a CSS? Any Ideas are valued thanks! Sorry for all the questions.

I have an older asm skimmer (G3 I believe) that still has a rio 2100 pump on it. (has been modified with a needlewheel impeller)

I'm useing it to cure 100 lbs of Live rock. (very smelly job) I have the riser pipe as low as it will go and it still keeps foaming over the collection cup. (very dry foam) I did a 100% water change on the live rock and that worked for about an hour. I cleaned the skimmer thinking that would help, but within an hour is was foaming over again. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Angie

Hey everyone,

I apologize in advance about this post but I just don't have time to read this entire ASM Club thread because I live overseas and my wife is home in the states for a few more days. My plan is that she can bring the skimmer back on the plane for me. Anyways I don't understand the recirc or gate valve mod. What do they do and are they worth it. I am kind of crunched on time and I don't seem to be getting very timely emails back from the website.

I have a 55 gallon tank with a 45 gallon sump (I probably only put 30 gallons in it though). I pull most of my stuff from the ocean so I am going to have a full blown reef tank. If you could suggest a setup that would be optimal I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks,

Josh

The gate valve mod is really just a gate valve on the output of the skimmer. It lets you adjust the level of water inside the skimmer by turning the valve instead of raising the riser on the output pipe. The recirc mod is when you drill a hole and have the input and output of the pump (the sedra included) connected to the skimmer. Normally the input is just in the open sump drawing water into the skimmer. So after you connect that pumps input into the skimmer, you then need one more hole to get water into the skimmer. So you drill one more higher up on the skimmer as your input. There are instructions for both here - http://www.asmskimmer.com/modifications.htm.

Thanks a lot for explaining that ROR. After I posted I saw the page on ASM. Do you have any suggestions for which model I should get with roughly 85 gallons total water volume?

okinawafish,Hope all is well overseas!!!! Bigger is always better so go with the ASM G3. If you purchase direct from them they will do all the modifications for you. I bought my G3 for $325 included shipping and all Mods. Just make sure they will have it ready. It is a big box for your wife to go to the airport with. Hopefully she could check it and not carry on. Best wishes!!!!

Yes she would check it as a piece of luggage. Do you know if they have to build it or do they hold them in stock? If they have to build I think I'm screwed.

Hello. Can someone tell me the height of the reaction chamber for the G4x? I'm looking to find the volume.

I am only able to find the total height of the skimmer.
