Angie, you might need to throttle back that pump some. I've found 2 different ways to accomplish this.Originally posted by angieg1123
I have an older asm skimmer (G3 I believe) that still has a rio 2100 pump on it. (has been modified with a needlewheel impeller)
I'm useing it to cure 100 lbs of Live rock. (very smelly job) I have the riser pipe as low as it will go and it still keeps foaming over the collection cup. (very dry foam) I did a 100% water change on the live rock and that worked for about an hour. I cleaned the skimmer thinking that would help, but within an hour is was foaming over again. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Angie
1. Increase the air supplied to the venturi. The higher ratio of air on a needlewheel pump will decrease it's flow. This can be accomplished with a larger diameter and shorter air tube.
2. Place a reducer or internal washer in the pumps output tube to reduce it's flow.
The rock you are curing may have a large amount of die off which is normal for rock thats never been cured. If you are getting thick skimmate then keep it going as this will help the curing process. You could always tap a drain spout into the collection cup and lead this to a bucket. Keep the water in your curing tank moving so the rock can start to act as it's own filter.
