Does anybody have the slightest clue how the skimmer reducer is attached to the body of the skimmer (just above the gray band where the "cone" area is attached) I can see that there is some type of orange o-ring in there, but My skimmer has actually sprung a leak (the G3) there. I am wondering if this has happened to any of you before, and what you have done to correct this.... I must have knocked it apart yestarday while I was modding....

Murphy's Law is now in full effect.... uggggggggg

This is the area that is causing the problem... It is not a hug leak, but there are microbubles and some water esacaping, and I fear that it may be getting worse.....

Is it glued on, pressed on, bonded on, taped on, velcroed on, twisted on, or just sitting there???? :( :( :( :(

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated on this one.....

Nah, that part is fitted together like the collection cup. It's probably just loose. Take it off and fit it back on. I'm sure it's fine. Just twists off.

lol.... Kenfused good name.. My next mod will be the recirc oin the 5000 with the 3500 as a feed but for now I have some new attinic lighting to get done :) always something... SO kenfused did you find that there were back pressure issuses when you recirced it ? and do you have the airline on the feeder as well ?
I didn't find any backpressure issues and have the airline tubing attached to the recirc pump only. The feed pump is pointed directly below my overflow which has air bubbles boiling into the sump. the feed pump is drawing in enough air from the overflow mixture, so if I add the air tubing it draws too much air and starts to surge (overwhelmed with air). I found that with the air injected only to the recirc pump and the mix of air drawn in from the overflow water that I get a perfect mix in the skimmer body.

nic_u812, My skimmer has leaked around that seal for ages. I finally gave up on trying to keep it sealed. You could seal it up with aquarium sealant (silicone) but you would lose the ability to clean inside.

Konadog, I did all the mods myself. You could have it done for you by ASMSkimmer.com but I personally think it's easier to plan it out youself. That way you avoid getting the body drilled in the wrong place and having the skimmer not fit in your sump. It's fairly simple and myself or others on this thread can walk you through it.

When you take your skimmer apart at that joint to clean, does the gray band remain on the skimmer, or does it come off with the top part, just like the skimmer collection cup does??

It's exactly the same - twist lock w/ an o-ring. If you were cleaning it I suspect you knocked it loose. Try twisting it off, checking the o-ring, and then replacing it. It generally leaks a tad but not too much.

IIRC it goes the opposite way of the cup?

I was cleaning my skimmer today and the cone part that you take of to clean the main skimmer base broke. The clips sheared off is what I mean. Can you order a replacement part just the cone that is for a g4x? Its only 6 month old and I'd hate to have to buy another skimmer. this one has worked great for me.
Thanks Erik

i got mine at thatfishplace but they price matched from fishsupply.com. i think fishsupply.com however has the G2 with a sedra 3500. thatfishplace has the G2 with the sedra 5000.

Best bet would be to contact ASMSkimmer.com - if they can't get the part then it probably isn't sold.

And if you can't get it then I'd glue/silicone it down. Given how wide the mouth of the G4 series is I imagine you could probably be able to clean it even with the cone glued on (better than replacing it).

Thanks, I may have questions later. I did check out the web site and it doesn't look difficult. I do like the reminder of checking how it will fit before drilling the skimmer !

Good call on the glueing it down, Im going to call saltycritter and see if dan could order the piece in for me. If not silcon here I come !!

I checked out the asm website and have a question. I have 2 G3's so I can do the mods while still running the other skimmer. On the "T" of the gate valve mod is the 3rd side left open? the side that faces up. Wont water come out of there instead of going to the elbow and back down. This mod just makes it eaiser to fine tune the foam head right. My G3's are not producing very good right now with their pipe all the way up so I'm looking for a way to improve the production. Thanks

As far as production is concerned, you're probably making the same mistake I did, running it too wet. Back it down a bit and leave it for a day, the "big bubbles" should be forming only 1" into the neck IMHO.

As far as the gate valve, I put the elbow in first, and the "T" after the valve.

The final Tee in the gate valve pipe acts as a vent pipe. I've tried it both capped and with an elbow, and it tends to burp and surge. Place a short piece of pipe extending upward from the Tee as a vent. On top of the vent I made a sound muffler out of the now unused foam filter that came with the skimmer. You could also put a cap on it and drill a small hole.

can i run a G3 in 12" of water, or should i try to go lower?

It's probably fine in 12", but most people seem to go for 8-10".

thanks for the reply, guess i can raise it up a little bit, have to actually get the skimmer in the sump and see exactly how much room i have.
