Doing this is not to help in break in, but to remove any oils or manufacturing material that make the breakin period take longer. As to how much, it's a variable that will be different for each skimmer.

Oh- I'm glad I asked.

Rick

It's definitely worth doing, and I guess in an indirect way, it does aid in breaking in the skimmer.

OK- I just bought an ASM G3 for my 120. I use an old "pos" skimmer now and it was time to upgrade.

I have a few questions:

How deep should the water be that the skimmer sits in?
Rick, the G2/G3 run best in approx 7-10 inches of water, but some have reported these skimmers running deeper. A max depth of 12" is about all I would run this skimmer at though you may have different results.

KENFUSED : The Rio 800 that you are useing for your feed ....is it a Venturi model
I'm using a Sedra 3500 as my feed and 5000 as my recirc. I think I mentioned a whil eback that a Rio 800 could be used as a feed pump based on it's GPH. Either the standard or venturi model could be used since the recirc pump is taking care of the bubbles.

whitten not to call you a liar, but i used to have an asm skimmer and they doo work well. but having that dark of skimmate and that much in one week would lead me to believe that there should be some foam somewhere in the collection cup, whether it be ontop of the skimmate of aound the neck, with my big skimmer, i get a cup full of foam, then it turns into liquids

Tim

Well sir, there usually is tons of foam right from the beggining but after that initial hit after I clean it there is only visible foam at ther very neck which is kinda hard to see in that picture since the skimmer is so dirty.

I don't know what elese to say, I can post some other pics so that we can inspect for foam, but I can say for a fact that I know the skimmer made it....unless we have a skimate elf.

You can kinda see some foam falling down from the neck, but since the neck is black with crud it is hard to see.

I have a question.

I have a used G3 that i am planning on using on a 100 gallon tank. I am wanting to do the gate valve mod for easier adjusting.
Here is the question. I have a 1" gate vavle laying around. It is threaded on both ends so by the time you get fittings in there it is about 3/4". Could i use this gate valve? I would have to bottleneck the output tube down to 1", then in the valve itself it would be 3/4, then back up to 1 1/4"
Would this restrict the flow too much?

Hope it isnt too confusing

rob, what kind of pump is that? Interesting impeller design.

There are no markings on the pump, so I am not sure. I do have a request into All Seas to find out though. I will post it once I get it.

I have thought about this myself...I think you will be ok, there is not that much water passing through the unit.

You will be okay as long as you keep the valve low. You would want to cut the riser as short as you can and install the elbow first, followed by the gate valve horizontally. This helps relieve back pressure so that the height of the valve does not add to the restriction. I found that the higher the valve, the wider open the valve must be. If I were using your 1" gate valve, I would still use a 1-1/4 elbow and pipe leading to the valve before reducing. Place another bushing after the valve to bring the output back up to 1-1/4" pipe, followed by a 1-1/4 Tee fitting.

Hi Rob, yes please post what you can about that pump as soon as All Seas responds. I for one would be very hesitant to buy that model not knowing if replacement impellers could be obtained at a reasonable cost. Looks like a great model for use on small frag tanks as well.

Also, given the size of that pump (looks wise) it may be a good candidate for a feed pump on our G2/G3 mod projects.

Question out there for all of you sedra 9000 owners. I am thinking of getting one for my recir'd G3, and then putting the 5000 on my G2 and just selling the sedra 3500 that is currently on my G2.

How well do you think a sedra 9000 would do on a G3 recirc'd? Are they worth the almost double wattage doubling increase? I am thinking that a G3 with a 9000 on it would really kick butt... would it be overkill though???

I want to put a needle valve on my G2...what size do I need???

any size that fits snuggly in the intake hose...

Thanks for the reply...I already ordered a couple for my skimmer...I'll just have to figure out how to make them not leak...maybe drill the hole a little smaller to make a tighter seal...I'll see what I get them!!!

Water level too high or about right? Ive had this G1X since Feb 2005. Decided to do the recirc mod on it just got it done tonight. Recirc pump is sedra 3500, direct feed from overflow. return pump is a mag7 through a SCWD. should I throttle the mag back a little. Im not sure if Im pushing too much water through it or not. This pic was taken about an hour and a half after the mod was complete.
