is it possible to get the new ASM mini and place it in my display tank? i dont have a sump and its way out of my budget to set one up for the 20-30 gallon tank i intend to get. i want to place the skimmer in the tank on a stank and lay the rock work around it. how many inches does the skimmer have to be drenched in water?

New club member. Bought a GS4 and Salty Critter gave me a free upgrade to the 9000 pump. On Day 2 it was pulling so much gunk it was amazing. It has been a week and I today I figured out how to get the cup off (dumb thing was on there so tight I thought it wasn't supposed to come off so I've been syphoning) Ok, so that was dumb. Anyway, got the cup off and there was at least a 16th inch of built up gunk. I knew my old skimmer was poor but the ASM makes it seem like I wasn't even running a skimmer before now. Amazing! I am extremely happy. And to think.. the LFS referred me to it.

Another happy customer

Got my g3 today

Got my g3 today

I have it in 10" of water. many bubbles but nothing coming up the cup neck yet . Its been in for 6 hours. The tank is new. A 150 set up for a week now. 175# of cured figi and about 100 crabs and snails. Probably not much waste to skim!

I just performed the gate valve mod to my ASM G3 earlier, though I made a few changes.

Rather than use 1-1/4" plumbing (which is extreme overkill IMO), I used a 1-1/4" to 1" reducer bushing (the 'flush' kind that fits in a coupling), which fit right into the riser tube outlet, then ran 1" plumbing through the rest of the mod.

I still have the gate valve closed about halfway, though I may have to open it back up some once the new PVC breaks in and the skimmer stops freaking out.

Here's a pic of it installed:

I also put the gate valve between the tee and elbow, so that it adjusts more like an AquaC skimmer... the riser pipe goes to the top of the riser tube inside the skimmate cup. I might cut this down a bit so that rather than have the skimmer cup overflow, it instead flows out of the drain riser, but I'm still up in the air whether or not I'm going to do it that way.

As an aside, I couldn't believe the size difference between 1" and 1-1/4" gate valves... the 1-1/4" is HUGE... almost twice the size for another 1/4" of pipe diameter. Oh, and I also found my gate valve at OSH... neither HD or Lowe's seem to believe that anybody could have a use for one of these.

I am hoping someone is on to answer a question, Do you have a problem keeping the rubber gasket on yuur ASM's? I have had my ASM for 3 months, and I am having a heck of a time with the pump staying attached.

I just purchased the ASM G3 in Nov. I didn't get into any of the mods, I am a bit illiterate when it comes to all of the up grades, It is just the standard ASM G3, Its driving me crazy with the thing popping out all of the time, I come down and the tank looks like a big bubble bath, I fix it and before you know it, it's out again. I was so excited to finally own one, but I am afraid that I am going to loose everything if I cant get it to stay in. Should I have siliconed it in?

Do the ASM skimmers not use a uniseal? I had the recir mod done when I bought mine and hate the other gasket it had, I thought thats was the one I got from asmskimmer. I guess I need to order a new uniseal too.

If you have the recic. mod .......one of the seals is a Uniseal .....the other is a crappy seal from ASM .....you can tell the difference.........the Uniseal.....says " uniseal " right on it

April540:

Try working the uniseal onto the pump outlet to where at least 1/2" of pipe is exposed on the skimmer end of the seal. Then, work the uniseal into the skimmer body and pop close the uniseal. I had to take the unit out of the sump to get enough muscle on it, and was VERY careful to maintain the pump/skimmer geometric relationship as I replaced it in the sump. In my case, I think the hole is about 1/8" too high, so I needed to use floss to level out the pump.

FWIW, James.

I skimmed through much of this thread, but I've missed the answer to my question. So,

What tricks do you use to quiet the venturi air intake?

Later, James.

I run my venturi line into a purigen container filled with carbon and filter floss.

I guess I must have a pretty old G3 (purchased in 2004), because the pump inlet on the skimmer isn't a piece of pipe in a uniseal, but a piece of gray plastic glued right to the skimmer body.

From the sound of it though, I got lucky, since I have hardly any problems with the pump popping off the side of the skimmer... it did it a couple times when I first got it, but then I pushed the pump on really tight and haven't had any problems since then.

Just set up this G3 with all the mods. I did away with my fuge and replaced it with this skimmer. I know it is a strange setup but atleast I get to see all the bubbles LOL
