also, im in the process of my 120 gal with 55 gal sump. I've decided on the G-4 plus. Is that an overkill? I'm going with this because I hope this skimmer will work for years and I plan on attaching another smaller tank to the system later on in a couple years. Also if i went with the G-3 and modified it it would cost the same with all the extra pumps. Do you guys think it's the best call?

I just got a G3 4 days ago pumping green out already put on my 75 to see how it works for my 120 I am starting.
YES G4 will be good thinking ahead for more tanks and fish load.

i have a question. my G-3 is on my 55. I have a ball valve to adjust the flow rate, and i get the fine bubble to come up to the top but it really doesnt make much skimmate at all. like less than a cm in 3 days? it makes the lid and the shaft in the cup very brown. it doesnt form the dry bubble at the top. should it make more or not? i only have a tang, midas blenny, and 2 clowns in the tank. I should tell you that i have the skimmer set up in the sump of the wet/dry filter. It sucks the water in right after it goes through the bioballs. can someone help me with this?

You should get more skim than that. Sounds like you need to raise the water level in the skimmer. Lots of pictures in this thread that show the best level.

On a side note have you looked at doing away with your bio balls?

Do you really need to get rid of the bio-balls? Don't the Bioballs harbor good bacteria as well....

If you have live rock you don't need bioballs. You should do a search on bioballs. There is a lot of information out there. You could also search Nirate Factory.

I the G3 /w the sedra 5000 pump noisy? My tank is in my living room and the pump and skimmer has to be quiet. I'd be replacing my aquaC urchin with maxijet 1200 which seems to run very quiet right now.

tibbs2, the pump is pretty quiet, but the air suction tube gurgles, sometimes it's quite loud (in a quiet room). You can make a muffler for it out of PVC and filter floss.

well, IMO. you could do anything you want. Make one pump, two pumps, or three pump all recirculate. or just make one pump recirculate and have others feeding.
but, i would have two recirculate and one feeding. that sounds like the best of both worlds to me. what size tank and bioload is this for?

I think you could do anything with it & I am not sure the size of your skimmer but I would guess 3 needlewheel pumps could be to much air as well as flow for the skimmer. I would just get a properly sized pump to bring water into the skimmer & let the existing NW pumps do their thing.

For my ER 12-2 which is 12 in dia & 30 in tall I use 2 of their new SP4 pumps & a eheim 1250 which flows 320 ish gph. Works great & thye suggested this vs 3 NW pumps!

I have a question of all of you ASM users. I just got a MINI "G" from salty critters, and this thing is very noisy! Are all asm's loud? This thing will drive you crazy. I'm wondering if when it gets broke in will it be quieter? And this thing fills the entire sump with micro bubbles. Is this normal?

Take the pump off and go to the kitchen sink. I found that I had air trapped in it. Play around with it. It sound be quite.

What would be a properly sized pump? My overflow drains around 600gph. Should I just use my drain to feed the skimmer? Would this be too much flow? The skimmer has an 8 inch body and it is 36 inches tall.

My new G-3 (unmodded) is arriving today. What's the optimal height/depth for it to sit in the sump? What's the easiest way to achieve that height? An eggcrate stand? (My sump is about 18" deep or so)

I am getting a new asm g-4 for 300.99+tax wich is a great deal, there is a lfs/website that quoted me that about 6 months ago and is willing to honor it!!! however I am wondering if it is really dificult to make into a recirc model, Im not the best DIY'er and would hate to damage my investment....anyone here know what exactly Ill need? and if your in the area I would love some help. I have a 150g 60x24x24 and Im planning on doing a sps tank but dont know if this will be enough skimmer for what I want to run...modded or not? I pick it up tonight and Im stoked!!!


For those of you who may be intersted in this price I can def ask if he is still offering the skimmers at this price.....but he did give me this quote quite a while back!
