I used a cheap B & D 1 3/4 on my G-4+. If you go to ASMSkimmer it will tell you what you need.

Some on this thread said it can be done, others said they would advise against it well, I set my new G-4+ up external and found no leaks (while breaking it in in the tub). I applied the recirc. mod as well and used silicone around both seals from the pump to the body of the skimmer (inside the body & outside). I also siliconed the cone to the body since the opening on the G-4 is large enough to fit my had into for cleaning. The collection cup is still removable and has no leaks. The T, gate valve, and riser tube all have been glued, only the 90 is pressed in so it can be removed when I have to remove the skimmer for cleaning, this makes getting out from under my tank easier. I am using the recommended RIO 800 pump to feed and have added a drain to the collection cup for the remote ETSS collector.

Aquaticeco.com has some good info and prices on uniseals. BTW, the said to use windex to help slip pipe into the uniseal. 
I just use water. they also give the size of the hole you need to drill. koden, hole saws do have very big teeth, it is a little scarey to drill a skimmer but take your time and it will be fine.

ddevlin, is your cup drain on the side or under the cup? I can't tell from pic's..

ok, having read a FEW pages of this im going to get a g3, seems to be best bang for my buck.
ill have a drain fitting into the cup for vacations
ill purchase the pieces for a gate valve mod myself at a hardware store cause that seems easy to do - correct?
ill have them do the labor for the recirc mod.
NOW - ill prolly put the feed hole placement at the 5 oclock position, but how HIGH on the column????? i want it to be fed from a maxijet 900 which seems about the right flow with low wattage - correct?
here's my second question. the maxijet seems to require 5/8 inch flex tubing, but the drain fitting for the feed hole is at a 1/2 inch fitting.... how do i resolve that problem???
please answer my question so that i can soon join the club.

well its here and boy, i never imagined it would be this big. my 95g reef is under construction, upgrading from my 4 year old 55g.
anyway, my new sump will be in the basement directly under the tank so i have lots of room to play with. i am definately planning the gate valve mod, and concidering the recirc mod. heres the catch, i also bought an ozonizer/contoller. i know how to hook it up, just wondering who does this and to what sucess?

ccradr, I thought my G3 was JUNK too, untill I re-installed it and got good and adjusted to changes.. Thing does work.

Hey guys I haven't done any mods to my ASM G3. But like I mentioned earlier, when I added vodka to the water it went crazy. My nitrates went from 50ppm to 0 in 2 weeks with no water changes. Yep thats right. Right now I need to leave my skimmer off and add skimate to the water to keep some nitrate for my mushrooms. But anyways here is one day of vodka skimmate

I am currently injecting ozone via a G3 with GAC attached to the drain where the skimmed water coming out. But I still can smeall residue ozone coming from the waste collection cup, any idea on how to get rid of the residue ozone is appreciated, I have been thinking about drill some holes on the lid and put a bag of GAC on top of it. I don't know how effective it would be since ozone call still leak out from the side. I really don't want to risk my health over a reef tank at all cause, EPA suggests anything above 0.08ppm of ozon can signifcant incrase mortality in human.
