ASM Skimmer Club!

So I tried the other way and while there is a little relief I went ahead and used an old rio I had to feed it. I will see If anything changes skimmate wise.

I was told to use a 300-400gph feed pump, and used a mag4. Skimmer did so-so. I bumped the pump up to 600gph (most likey 500gph due to 1/2 feed line fittings) and my skimmer really took off! water is very clear and my ozone has never kicked back on because of water quality
BTW, G4x and @ 250g total water. so I am feeding about 2x total water volume.

GEN-X 4100 instead of the Sedra 3500

GEN-X 4100 instead of the Sedra 3500

I have received some emails about using the GEN-X 4100 Needlwheel pump.

I used the Gen-x 4100 on my ASM G2.
I was very unhappy with the results of the Sedra 3500 pump and the G2 skimmer.

Here are my issues with the Sedra 3500

1. It had horrible performance
2. would get minimal liquid skimmate
3. had no power to lift the foam out of the collection cup
4. pulled only 5-10 schf/air

So i changed to a Gen-x 4100 Needlewheel Impellar
I had to modify a PVC elbow 3/4 inch, i "dremeled out" the inside of the fitting to allow it to fit over the Gen-x. took 10 min or so

With the Gen-x 4100 on a G2

1. I eliminated the need for a bulk gate valve, due to an underperforming pump
2. Got much better skimmate improvement
3. Much denser bubbles in body
4. pulled 15-20 schf/air

I have no other modifiations to my skimmer

Just a stock skimmer with a better performaning pump

Oh BTW this skimmer is on the same system as a MRC MR-2 skimmer
the are dueling right now and both are taking tremendous amounts of "crap" out of the water

My specs
120 BB SPS
500 MH watts
440 VHO watts
100 pounds LR
9 fish
40 sps colonies and frags
Po4 undectable Salifert
No3 1-5 ppm Salifert
Ca 420
Alk 3.2 meq/l
Temp 78-80
Sg 1.025-6

so does anyone think that two sed 5000 will be too much pump for a recirc on the g4 body? i have seen it done with deltec....

No, I think this would rock! Leave one n the normal configuration, recirc the other.

i have a g-2 in my sump located in my living room. it sounds like a freight train running thru the living room when i turn it on! with time will this quite down and if not is there any way to quite the skimmer down?

thanx mike

now thats an idea!! I was going to recirc both and run a maxijet 1200 to it for a feed pump but you may be on to something!!! i cant beleive that this hasnt been done already! I guess it time to expereiment....

ive got some questions i have a mini g it works OK but im doing a valve gate mod now on it and was wondering about if anyone has done a recirc mod on theirs yet or anything else out there that works better im putting good stuff but only half a cup every week lightly stocked though but just wanting input and also last and final thing anyone using any different pump other then the genx1000?

i just put the gate valve mod on my asm g2 skimmer and now when its wide open the collection up just fills with water and bubbles. no skimate. tha gatevalves bottom is where the riser cone starts off from the main body. where does evryone else have their gatevalves? lower?

I'm thinking about getting a ASM2 for my 75 gallon reef and I'm wondering if I would have to do the gate mod and what's the main point of it. Just to raise the water level in the skimmer?

I'm thinking of doing the gate valve and recirc mod on my G-6. Any one know of the gph pump to use for a feed pump? Also where is the best place to put the input from the feed pump, top, bottom, middle? I have about 400-450 total water volume.

Thanks,

Todd

Many say feed 1- 1 1/2 times your total gallons. I have found that its best to feed 2 x -on my tank. reefgreener, I would think a mag 7 or 9.
Also, IMHO and many others I know (that build awsome skimmers)Do not place feed near the top! This creates turbulance at the top of the skimmer and draws protiens away from the foam head! we are try to create a stable head of foam (I found this out on my first R/C skimmer) feed it about 1/3 to 3/4 way down the body (I like 1/2 way) . And I put a 90s on mine causing the water to swirl in the body (on discharge of r/c pump also)

Hey Greg! I have several skimmers! most are mods of name brands, 2 are DIY. the ASM is modded r/c with a sedra 9000 the same way as www.asmskimmer.com. the feed is 1/3-1/2 the way down the body. Sorry, I have not taken the time to learn how to post pics. :( guess I should, just havn't. BTW, I really like the Deltec skimmers, and in no way can a ASM equal to a Deltec overall. But IMHO-- my ASM skimmer is pulling nog (skimmate) as well as Deltec. And I have been around, and have first hand experiance with MANY of them (deltecs)!!!

Greg, if you really did not want to cut holes in yours. I do believe the gen-x 4100n/w would greatly improve your skimmer! (Like bond007069 )
The valve mod really does improve control!! ASM should any sell skimmers with it!

QUESTION

does the water level around the skimmer matter OR affect the performance if the skimmer has the Recirculation mod? i will probably have a feed pump but i might go with directly fed skimmer from the overflow.

the way that i think about it, it might only matter about the surrounding water level beause the venturi has to suck harder to bring air down into the skimmer.
