ASM Skimmer Club!

Charlie...I thought the key to more skimmate was to skim from the overflow? I'd have to feed with like a maxijet 600 then. Re: skimmate volume...I guess I'm just used to seeing a massive amount after one day in pictures posted. I may also run some pvc towards the bottom of the skimmer from the overflow feed to interact with the raising bubbles less.

Goodbye!! It was a brief stay in your club ASM Crew, but I must leave and go back to the MRC Club. I could not get my G3 to fit in the spot in the sump where I wanted it to go. Maybe later on down the road I will get a chance to use your skimmers. I think the recirc mod and the gate valve mod is the best thing ASM could have done toraise the awareness and excitement (not to mention prices) of their skimmers. I have no hard feelings and wish you all the best!!

beachbum, feeding from the over flow is the best way I know.. its just very hard to control.
mrjames, MRC make fine equipment! (as you already know) I was lucky enough to have a ulitlity room behind my display tank. the slump, fuge and other equipment take up more that the tank!

OK.....

Looking for a new skimmer.

Is there any experience (good/bad) with the G4+?

It will have the recirc, and gate mods on it.

What is the clearance needed to remove the cup on this?

I'm really more interested with the bad experiences of what was wrong, how it was fixed. Where you bought it from, are you happy with them?

This will all be in a 120 gallon with TSV of 160. I also will be upgrading tank size in the future. Which model of ER, or MRC would this be comparable to?

Real quick question. I have an ASM G3 skimmer, and the little intake pipe that hooks up to my sedra pump doesn't seem to be the same as most other peoples. Instead of having a uniseal, it seems that the little gray intake pipe is actually glued onto the skimmer body. What reall sucks is that when my pump and skimmer sit in my sump, the intake pipe and the pipe on my pump dont line up perfectly. So the pump is kinda tilted. i was wondering if it is possible to somehow remove that gray intake pipe and replace it with a uniseal?

tony...I had the same problem on my G3. Of course, I bought it pre-owned (been looking for a vehicle for my wife) and the guy did it himself. The "tilt" in the pump actually caused my pump to come off when I was at work and soaked my living room (search my old posts). I used rubberbands to make "compression o rings" and then ziptied the whole thing together. Never again will that happen! Of course, I have to remove the whole skimmer to take the pump off which will suck when it comes due.

IMHO, Asm's are really not the best quality :( .. but they are as good at skimming as any skimmer- I have owned!
Tony, does it hurt the performance of your skimmer? if not, then I would just leave it.. My skimmer came with the pump discharge into skimmer a little low. I was very afraid it would make it impossable to make it r/c. Luckly it didn't. pump just sits at a slight tilt.
I plan to try and make some fittings out of flat 1/4" acrylic-- heated and curved to match skimmer body-- that will glue to the inside of my skimmer body that will do away with the uniseals. I just have not found the time.. :)
To those that have been kepting up with my feeder pump trials/changes, Update on the r/c G4X skimmer: the gen-x 1600 n/w was just too large (1400gph?) so last night I put a OR3700 n/w (900gh) on it. I really like it better, but a week or so will give it a much better test. I also have a genx 2400 n/w that I will try later. ( if I think 900 is too much)

oh.. can anyone recomend which maxijet pump is used for feeding the G2? ....... Right now I'm using the Maxijet 1200. Is it too much flow for the G2?

I'm planning on joining the ASM club when I order a G2.

Should I stay with the pump included with the skimmer? I need an efficient skimmer as well as an efficient pump -- if only for the reason that my electric rates are almost doubling starting July 1.

Many thanks for any suggestions!

Lynn

John 37--- I hope not! ASM doesn't seem to have any rep. or customer service..?? Kind of a bad show for us that love the USA, and things made here.. IMHO. Thank a vet for your right to speak out!

so i just got a g5(used) and i've seen a couple different versions of the gate valve mod.
Which way is the best?
is there a difference between them?
Does anyone use a g5 and w/gate valve mod? can i see a pic please?
is $350 a good price for a g5?
how much will the 2 sedra 9000 raise the temp in my tank?

thank you and sorry for so many questions.

Charlie...are any of those too much flow for a G3? Also, are the pump bodies basically the same dimensions? It would need to fit the current recirc holes I have already for the G3.
