ASM Skimmer Club!

I really didn't think my feed from overflow-- all the way thru-. My return pump is mag 18, so by the time it gets thru piping and penductors I am sure its below 1200gph. to tank.. But MAN was that dumb, Thats way too much to feed my skimmer-- Water is moving so fast thru skimmer- it doesn't have time to be skimmed !!! Recently, on the deltec forum I read/saw a diagram of a nice "tee" supply feed that seems to have corrected problems of feeding off overflow. I guess I will see if I can do this!
I really need to come up with way to properly support pumps on ASMs. I plan to install 2 pumps (like deltec 702/902). feed then should be @600-800gph (best guess)

I just started my ASM G-4 plus and with the return all the way down it still wants to overflow in the top. I had to hook up a ball vavle to bring down the level but it's not really producing any skim. The water level is pretty high, like 12 inches. Is that why it's doing that? ITs a brand new tank too

it will take a while to produce skimmate (different times on different tanks) give it a few days to a week.. yes, you did answer your own question. water level is too high. (or skimmer to low in slump)

I ran a test on skimmer depth starting at 11 inches and worked my way down to 8". I got the best production at 8". About a month ago my insump skimmer stand broke and I had to rebuild it. Mean while I let my skimmer run in water that is 13.5 inches deep and my production improved much to my surprise. Much drier then the wet skim I got before. Someone else here had brought this up before but I did not believe it. So the correct answer is 8" or less or 13" or more.

werid. Well, I would have to take my whole set up apart to change anything. But it'd be easier to make it 13.5 inches rather than 8. So I guess I'll hop on that side, be one of the few

Last night checked my water depth. 9"
uscgbeachbum, I removed the direct feed from overflows--it was flowing way too much water (1000gph?) into skimmer and installed a genx 2400 n/w (600gph) as feed pump. Skimmer body looks like it has 2x more bubbles! The "head" of foam is definatly more stable. I may have to try a smaller n/w feed pump.. I would like to feed @ 350-400gph..

I just got my 3rd ASM skimmer... So far I have a G-1X, G3, and a G-4X.

The G-4X is a beast! I was planning on recirculating it for my 180g SPS, but its so huge I don't know if I need to now. Already got the gate valve mod on it though.

How deep should a G-4X run in water?

How deep should a G-4X run in water?

I have the same skimmer on asmskimmer.com said 8-10 inches is fine..

Mine is under 12" of water I believe. Consistent water height is the most important...

My G4x has the recirc mod fed by the mj1200 and I am getting about 3" of skimmate in the collection cup every two to three days.

So I realized my skimmer was always at 13.5 inches deep. The G4 plus. But I do have some skim, it's been there for like two weeks now, but the tank is only two weeks old. So I'll continue to keep it at that height and see what happens.

I loose about 1 inch of water in my sump everyday. Will this effect a g3's performance?

Yeah.. Put a baffle in your sump so the skimmer is at a constant water level.

Keep in mind the baffle will change where your water evaporates. The section after the baffle will be the location now and will go down even faster since the chamber will be smaller.

I am running a G3 with recirc and gate valve mods (fed with a maxi-jet 1200) on my 38 gallon with a 40 breeder sump/fuge,talk about overkill. I get a gurgling sound through my venturi line every couple of weeks and so far I have poured nearly boiling RO/DI water down the tube to clean it.

How and How often do you guys clean your ASM's?

I have no idea how to clean this beast.

I am fairly happy with the skimmer but I feel the build quality is severely lacking and I absolutely hate the fitting into the uni-seal after adding the recirc mod. I don't get a whole lot of skimmate but I fell it is because I am really oversized on the skimmer. I get a lot of gunk in the neck though and yellowish tea colored skimmate.
