I started my skimmer test at 10.5 inches and worked my way down 1/2 inch a week at a time. I found the best results below 8 inches. 10 inches was bad.

Several people responded that they had good luck at 12" but I did not believe them until my stand broke.

I keep mine at 7.5 because I found that water turbulance does not effect the skimmer here like it does 12-13".

From all of this I have found 8 inches or less is best or 12-13 inches. The zone 8.5 to 11.5 (appox) is less effective.

I was finally able to do a saltwater test with my G-4x and I noticed something and I am wondering if it is common.
There seems to be water leaking from the seam between the body and the cone.
Is this a common thing with these skimmers?
I tried to twist it tight enough to make it stop and it still has water coming out.

Interesting. thanks. Back to HD for some eggcrate for that stand! =)

if the skimmer is modded with the recirc, gate valve, and feed pump mod... the water level that the skimmer sits in doesnt really effect the skimmers performance... or does it?

yeah, that's what i'm thinking but who knows... still have the urge to ask. anyone else want to jump in?

Dose anyone run their skimmers with the gate value mod external to their sumps? I'm having a bit of trouble fitting my G-3 under the stand in the sump. With the extra 8" of height it would be through the bottom of the tank! Thanks.

With my G-4, you would not be able to use it outside a sump because the seems leak so bad.

Mine leaks so bad, that when I raise the water level up into the cone, it pushes the cone and collection cup right off.
Wow, what a pos.

be sure to turn the 90 to the same direction... I am using a gen-x 2400 right now (a hair to big) looking for a sedra 2500-3500 ;)

I was wondering if I were to add a sedra 2500 needle wheel pump as the feed pump to my G-4x, would this create more froth area at the top of the skimmer body cone area, ( for lack of a better phrase) would I be able to lower the actual water level inside the skimmer and lessen the leaking at the flange between the body and cone?

Really? Might want to make sure it's closed tighter. Mine doesn't as I've done this by accident. I wish mine would. instead it sprayed the collection cup lid and made quite a mess.

i hate to say it guys but i think im leaving the club......the beckett just draws me (and alot of air) in. im just not impressed with my G2 any more and im moving up to a 120 with a 40 gallon sump and a 15 gallon refugium. anyone care to talk me off the ledge?
