i have read a few things about recirc mods and gate valve mod. if you perform these, can you bring it out of your sump with a feed pump? has anybody tried this successfully? LMK.

I installed my gate valve mod on my g4+ last night. I have had to valve all the way open and shut. However, every time I turn on the skimmer the collection cup fills with water withing 15 seconds and begins overflowing. I had to skimmer in a vinegar bath for 2 days and also ran it in sump for 2 days. Before the gate valve mod it was working ok. Any suggestions as to why it will fill the cup immediately?

Are you still using the original grey pipe that use to control the level in the skimmer?
Try lowering it some.
 
i just bought a g4 + and cant wait to put on my 120. reefgeek has great sale going on. it was only $373.50 with shipping.

does everyone experience the typical break-in period of a few days? any thing else i should know before setting up?

I had the same problem with my G3 modded. All i had to do to fix the problem was lower the control pipe all the way down. If that doesnt work... get a replacement pipe if you dont want to cut down your original control pipe.

Would you guys recommend using a hole saw or a dremel to drill on the ASM? If using a dremel what attachments are best to use? I have the diamond tipped ones recommended for drilling glass.
 
Hole saw for sure. I think you can get away with using a dremel when you're going to use a bulkhead, but I'm thinking a uniseal needs a hole thats rounder than a dremel would make (at least rounder than one made with me at the controls!!)

I used a hole saw... quick, easy, done!!
 
i have a quick question. my skimmer is only skimming green skimmat and it is not brown at all. what could this mean. also i think that my pump may be a lil under power i have a G2 and a 3500 no mods. i only get the dence bubbles like a quarter of an inch from the top of the cone. other then that below is just a lot of moving water with bubbles swirrling. is it very important that your salinity is say .025 to .026 and will it make more skimmat. Thanks for any help

salinity is awfully important with any skimmer. I get green skim when I am running my current skimmer kind of wet. Might want to dry dialing it back a nudge if your looking for thicker skim. I'm one of those people who like to skim a little wet, so its just a personal prefrence.

I was planning on cutting a hole in the top of the skimmer body to fit a 1/2" MPT to 1/2" hose barb adpater. A 1/2" MPT is WAY bigger then 1/2", almost bigger then even a 3/4" bit will make a hole for. I guess I just have to order an 11/16" bit online.

Hey Freds, not sure if you've done anything about this yet,

I did a mod similar to what you're considering, where I drilled and tapped a hole for a 3/4" MPT fitting. I just used a 7/8" flat (spade-type) drill bit to make the hole for the 3/4" MPT tap. (note that this is only 3/64" smaller than the recommended 59/64" hole size for that tap). If you want to make a hole for a 1/2" MPT tap, then use a 5/8" flat drill bit (this is only 3/32" smaller than recommended). When working with thin, soft plastics it's pretty safe to go this much smaller for the tap. (Now, if you were trying to tap a hole in the side of a 1/4" thick iron tank it would be a completely different story.) When forced to choose between a larger or smaller hole size (compared to the proper pilot hole size) for a tap, you should ALWAYS go on the smaller side if you want to prevent leaking. The first couple cutting threads on the tap will ream the hole to the right size for the threads anyway, and just make sure you run the tap in nice and flat. HTH
 
What's the concensus for using 90 or 45 degree angles with the recirc mod? I'd read they increase contact time, but I've also read they can cause a ton of micro bubbles. What are people's experiences?

Mine currently has the gate vavle.
 
MJ, I believe I read the same post you are refering to.:confused:
I am having no problems with micro bubbles but I have a large slump.. (45 turned sideways not downward) . I truly believe that it increases contact time.
BTW, I tend not to believe some peoples post's ... They claim to have done certian things and know alot about everything.. but after some time reading --you find they really don't have any idea whats really happening!!
( Micro bubbles could be a sign of too much flow thru thier skimmer)
 
True. The post I read had the 90 pointed down, ala BK skimmers. Wasn't sure how it worked in other directions.

Here's how I did the recirc mod to my G4x:

I just used a couple of street elbows to get the recirc pump's outlet over towards the side of the chamber, and it's discharge creates a lot of circular swirling action inside it. This allowed me to sort of "aim" the output. At first I had it kind of pointed down, and a lot of micro bubbles came out. Then I moved the second elbow slightly pointed upwards. When I made that change there was a lot less micro bubbles coming out.
 
Joined the ASM ranks today...ordered a G4X for my 90gal. LPS reef. May be a little overkill for a 90 w/100gal. sump but thats how I roll.:p Probably been answered before but are ASM skimmers ozone safe?
