ASM Skimmer FAQ's

I am thinking of getting a G4 for my new 240g reef tank. Do you think the G4 will be good enough to handle the load? It is rated for more then that, but I was curious if anyone else around here has a G4 and a tank that is around 240g? How well does it seem to work for you? Do you wish you would have gone to the G4x or something else??

I was thinking about the G4x, but not sure it will fit in my stand. If it does, I may go with that just for the added assurance. Anyway, I just wanted to get some feedback from others that are using a G4 and a nice sized tank.

Thanks for your feedback!!

Please do not trouble shot on this thread. This thread is intended as a FAQ page for ASM skimmers.
Please trouble shoot in the ASM Skimmer Club! thread. If you want to add information that you think other ASM owners might find helpful, please do so. Thank you.

I was wanting to find some Info on the AMS skimmer. Thank you tenshi for this thread. I have a 90g and without reading this thread I would have bought the gx1, Now I see from this site and other sites you placed up that they are Over rated. I will now buy the GX2 and thank you for helping me find the place with the cheapest. You saved me a butt-load of research:smokin:

G3 Dimensions

I have had a lot of requests regarding the true dimensions of the ASM Skimmers.

I recently measured a G3 and this is what I came up with.
Footprint: 9.5 X 12
Height: 23.5

Does anyone have the true dimensions of the other skimmers? I will be remeasuring all of the skimmers as I have time.

Hi guys got my NEW ASM G5 in 3weeks ago but the vender didn't send any pumps with it. SO had to wait 2 more weeks for the pumps to get here NOW there here but there is no seals where the pumps go through the body finaly got all the missing stuff. it has been running now for 3 days. BOY this thing really pulls some junk out of my tank. beats the heck out of my old downdraft. pretty big tho but i had the room so guess I would have to say I really like what I see.

I want an ASM G-1x Skimmer for my tank but my sump has an open space of 7.5 x 14 inches. Will I be able to maneuver/angle the protein skimmer in a way that would it would fit ???

pump differences and aggressive skimming question

pump differences and aggressive skimming question

Ok, this question was asked previously, but I didnt see the answer to it.
1) I have a G2, and wondering if there would be any advantage to switching the pump from a 3500 to a 5000.

2) Also, many people talk about aggressive skimming. What is aggressive skimming, and how would it be setup on the G2? thick skimmate?

I am no expert on the g2 for I have a g3, but the sedra 3500 poumps out 350 gph and the 5000 is rated 500gph so it would logiaclly follow that the 5000 would be a little more efficient especially as a recirculator, but as a feed pump I am not sure what the g2 is rated for at max gph.
Aggressive skimming to me is not the thick green skimmate that is for those people who are being selective aggressive skimming is the wet skim to me that way you are trying to take more out of the water in a shorter period of time, where if you go for the thick green dry skimmate yo are trying to remove only the particulate matter and not any excess salt water.
Hope that helps

(bump) Please help cause I want to buy one but I dont know if it will fit:

So the consensus that aggressive skimming is then a dark green that is quite liquidy. Correct?

My tube sits just at the point where the bottom of the collection cup is, and the foam up to about half the cup. I believe that creates some back pressure.

I have a couple of questions. What do the gate valve and recirc. mod. do? Also is the ASM G3 ozone safe?

The gate valve mod enables you to do the same thing as raising and lowering the riser tube. However, with the gate valve, it allows you to "fine tune" the water level inside the skimmer. Letting you make smaller adjustments. It also lets you make these adjustments without getting your hands wet!

The recirc mod turns your skimmer into a "recirculating skimmer." Basically what it's doing is pushing more bubbles thru the skimmer, allowing a higher dwell time, thus resulting in more efficient skimmate.

Hope this helps...

oh yeah... and I believe it IS ozone safe. :smokin:

Thanks for clearing this up. Are the mods worth the money?
Does anyone know for sure about the ozone?

C'mon guys. I want to get this thing ordered soon. Need to know about the ozone.

pleeeeeeeeeeeaaaaseeeee!

Yes it is ozone safe, there are many people that use ozone, if you look in to it on the asm skimmer club thread, and or go to a few different web sites that sell it.

IMO yes, the mods are definately worth it. I would hate to have to try to deal with adjusting without the gate. The recirc just makes a good skimmer into a better one. I have mine directly fed from my overflow so 100% of my water runs thru the skimmer.
and again with the ozone Im almost positive it is ok... Ive read in several places of people using it. Check the other ASM threads as well as asmskimmer.com forums
