Speaking of which (and sorry for the quote-hijack!), does ATI use any numbering system to tell various upgrades apart? Knowing this might be useful when ordering from online stores, so we don't get sent older models than expected.
Also, how many upgrades are there in the first place? So far I recall reading about:
* dimmable T5 option added
* white(?) LEDs changed to multi-color
* color composition of LEDs changed more than once?
* reinforcement for sagging acrylic screen added
These are not upgrades, but rather specification improvements. Model numbers are the same.
* dimmable T5 option added -
Incorrect. All units (except for the 80w USA (110volt fixtures)) come with dimmable T5's. This was never an option
* white(?) LEDs changed to multi-color -
Apart from the change of Royal Blue and White diodes to the quad chip Luxeon M's no changes. So again, only minor change.
* color composition of LEDs changed more than once? -
As far as I know ATI always had Red, Blue, Royal Blue and White (6500K) diodes.
The original R33FBUILDERS article reported green diodes etc, which was incorrect. I know of no colour changes.
* reinforcement for sagging acrylic screen added -
Only a slight design improvement. Not an upgrade.
Therefore, only small improvements in design etc. The ONLY reason we know that the Royal Blue and White LED's were changed is because you can physically see that they are different as it is a multi-diode chip.
You will not be able to ask your supplier to get you a "newer" model because there is no newer model numbers. Its down to luck what you get. Hope that makes sense.
Other manufacturers are doing the same thing and will source different bins/newer more efficient diodes, but people havent got a clue because the newer diodes look the same outwardly. No manufacturer supplies the BIN numbers etc and but they do change to a newer diode if a newer cheaper/more efficient diode is available.
I know that because my buddy has 2 Radion Pro's (one bought earlier than other) and the Blue LED's look a slightly different shade of blue.
I know of another UK reefer who's Radion Gen2 had two different shades of Royal Blue on the two pucks on the same unit! Most likely due to one of the pucks being from a different bin/newer diodes.
