If that's a DSB its not deep enough FB. You need at least 6" I plan on doing a RDSB and a buttload of bioballs and a skimmer / UV light. Eventually.

70% of it is at least 8-9" deep.

Are you attempting a remote deep sandbed or a fluidized sand filter ?

Yes a remote deep sand bed.

I am not familiar with the concept of a deep sand bed of 8 - 9 inches. Can you explain the benifit 8 inches has over 2 inches? Do you leave the 8 inches untouched or do you stir it up?

You will need on heck of a skimmer with that bio load.

Sorry it didn't look that deep. Cool.

It's not a 10 gallon tank, that is probably what deceived your eyes. ;)

There is no real funtional difference of a deeper bead over a shallow bed just as long as it is deep enough to have a reduced oxygen layer.

The benefit comes from the additional surface area for bacteria. The more reduced oxygen area you have the more reduced oxygen bacteria you can have.

You should never stir a sandbed.

Not sure if you have read this article before but it is a very good read. http://www.ronshimek.com/deep_sand_beds.html

I have yet to decide what to about a skimmer.

Got an email from my rotifer provider. They are making me two "Special" bags of rotifers with 10X the normal volume for the same price. :D. However they warned me I need to use them within 24 hours as the water will go toxic much quicker due to the volume of rotifers. I will be picking them up Saturday morning after they drop them off. The great thing is they pack the rotifers in the bags on Saturday morning so they will only be in the package for about 3-4 hours when I get them.

FB, I've got aprox 20 percs about a month old now and a couple nests that should hatch this coming Sunday and Monday nights.
One's another perc and the other gsm. I wish I could find a better
source for rotiers, maybe some of the folks following your thread in the states can help me.
I ordered a larvae collector from CPR, will need it to try to get some of the gsm's, they spawned on the glass, I hope it's worth it.

Just tested my water parameters on my system and got the following

Ammonia 4 ppm -- oh wait did the test wrong nevermind it's zero.:o
Nitrite - 1 ppm
Nitrate - 20 ppm.

Looks like my cycle is pretty much complete. My ammonia indicator never moved from safe. I'm wondering how long it will take to reduce my nitrates.

I've got about 15-20 of these suckers in my one growout tank.

I was going to put all the sand plus these worms in my new RDSB good or bad idea

Good idea, you should populate the sand bed to keep it going strong, with 8-9 inches of sand, can have a lot more going on than just the bacteria.
Can't tell from the pic but the sand looks pretty dirty, may need rinsing.

Yes it is very dirty. I'm not going to rinse it but I am going to siphon all the detritus out!

I figured the worms couldn't hurt.

Sullyman,

If you want cysts to start from, or keep stored for a backup, Florida Aqua Farms is the place. For live shipped overnight, Reed Mariculture is good.

Picked up my two bags of rotifers this morning. Got a culture started up. took about 30% of it to seed the new larvae tank.

I also got the tile moved and setup in the 5 gallon tank. There were maybe 100 eggs on the tile not sure if some hatched last night or not. My mama clown is huge already she doesn't normally get big for another couple of days. I imagine the next will be a good batch.

The guy threw in a free bag on concentrated Nano so I'm using that for now. I will then be using the instant algae.

Wish me luck it's been awhile.

100% hatch last night. However the larvae seem small and skinny right from the start. I didn't expect much from this hatch as it was very small and probably not in the best shape. We shall see what tonight brings.
