ATTN: LFS employees

i think alot of these stories are funny but at the same time they are sad. all you lfs employees just keep saying how dumb these customers are. isnt it your job to answer these questions and to inform these people. i feel that it is your job to make sure that no live animal leaves your store unless you feel confident that it is going to a good home. this isnt a simple hobby it is very complex and expensive with even the experts not knowing everything. i agree that some questions seem rediculis, but that is what you get paid for isnt it. i feel very fortunate that the employees at my lfs are very knowledgable and friendly

Their job is to make a profit, doesnt really matter what is right morally. They might ask if you have this type of certain fish so they dont fight and one dies. If that happens that = a return. loss of profit.

and most the people working at petco selling fish etc dont tend to be very smart when it comes to what they sell anyway. they are just kids in most cases who slightly enjoy the hobby or just need the 6 dollars an hour.

I would say that about 90% of the people who come into the store I work at know nothing about fish, except popular culture. Fortunately, of those, most of them are just going to the 'zoo', so to speak, or buying for some other animal (dog food). And of the actual people buying fish, 50% of them are actually well informed; though plenty of them still don't grasp the nitrogen cycle, or some of the basic's of fish care. In fact, I would say I only get 2-3 people a day that I feel confident selling them what ever they want (on average), no question's asked. (but those people usually are just buying water or feeders)

On the other end of the specturm. About 50% of the customers know very little to nothing about fish. And many of those people are like that because the don't have the 'time' to learn or the desire to learn. I don't believe anyone I get is too stupid to learn.

I had a FW customer come in yesterday. His fish had been having health problems, Ick and Fin/Tail rot. I did a water test and probed him about his tank. Apparantly, someone (not another employee) told him that in the winter if you keep less water in your tank, your tank will hold heat better. So his tank was 2/3 full, and since that was below the height of his filter intake he just turned off his filters.

I will say, that he is willing to learn, he leaves his heater on now, instead of turning it off at night after I told him that was a bad practice.

My mrs works at a fish / pet shop. The other day a "lady" came in, clearly intoxicated. She asked dog treats and after being shown their location she picked up a pig's ear. Asking again where the treats were (next to pigs ears) she continued to destroy the nice display.
When she came up to pay my GF served her and she smelt.... well rotten. My gf (probably a bad idea) pulled her scalf up as it was freezing in the shop and well the woman stank. The woman went batsh*t crazy. Screaming "Do you also think I smell" before stating "I will never shop here again". Relief was apparent! Surely more than one person saying you smell means you have a problem!

Although, he does have a point that we were all wet behind the ears at one time or another; even though that wasn't the point he was making. I thank my LFS guys on a regular basis for all their help in answering questions. ahh, remember speel chek,:spin2: before I send.

My "job" is to sell the animals & as much stuff that's related to that animal as possible.

You can give all of the advice you want & share all of the knowledge in your head but if the person you're talking to isn't listening then it's not going to do any good.

Today I had a lady looking through the plant tank & ask me what the difference between the "loose" & "potted" plants was. I always thought it was pretty self-explanatory but I went ahead & explained it. I told her the loose plants were just the plants & the potted plants were the ones in the plastic pots.

I was helping another lady get info on a 40B & stand because we can't get the corner tank she wanted. Of course the only 40B stand & canopy we carried is now discontinued. So I'm writing down numbers & talking to my manager & find the ONLY stand in the entire area at another store. Then while she's looking for the canopy (turns out there's one in NJ but we can't get it) I am talking to the lady about her plans for the tank.

She's telling me how she wants a couple of "Nemos" (I didn't correct her because she was being very patient & understanding, I just kept referring to them as clownfish.) I go & get the info on the canopy & go back to give her an update. She says "I was wondering why you kept calling them Clownfish. Why didn't you correct me?" I just told her it had been a long day & I didn't want to embarrass her.

There was also a cool couple that came in looking to get some fish that would go alright with their tetras. They were looking at mollies & I told them they didn't seem to do well in this area. I don't know if it's the water quality or what but they just do not last around here.

They thanked me & kept looking around & they asked me to get them a couple of fish out of one tank. I thought they were referring to the mollies in the tank so I net one. The guy says "I meant the other type." I replied "Oh, my mistake." He sarcastically said something along the lines of "He's probably thinking 'what a dumba##.'" I laughed, apologized & told him how most people let us (the employees) talk but usually don't listen to our advice so I give them the best advice I can & if they still want to try I let them.

I was on the register today & some guy comes over & says he has to ask me something. I tell him alright, I'll be with him as soon as I check out all of the customers. So I go over to talk to a guy & he points at some Whisper filter & says that our other store has them with a $10 mail-in rebate & he asks me what I'm going to do about it.

"None of these have a manufacturer rebate. There's nothing I can do about it."
-"Why not?"
"Because it's a manufacturer rebate."
-"So."
"So it's the manufacturer that's giving the rebate, not the store."
-"I'll just go to the other store, then."
"Okay."
-"So you're just going to loose a sale? You're not going to give me $10 off?"
"No, I can't give you $10 off. I'm not authorized to do that."
---

So he hung out for about 30 minutes, left, then came back. He was probably there for about an hour before I left work at 5. My guess is he probably tried the same thing again with another employee. His problem is going to be that my general manager is going to be running the register all night. I'm sure she's going to be more than happy to give you nearly 20% off... Dummy.

I was at petco the other day, lookin around, noticed a ghost shrimp with a HUGE worm inside of him, seriously like bigger than his internal organs...
I showed it to the lady, and she said "oh well that happens", and walked away to continue something else....

Why do they only call them Nemos? not Marlins or Corals?

The guy I bought the fish from called them a Dory and two Nemos. I dont complain because I bought all three for $25. I just call one of the nemos, Marlin.

My next fish will be a gurgle.

lolz.

I really want a deb/flow, but do you have any idea how hard it is to find a schizophrenic damsel.

And did anybody really get the name of that fish?

Deb and Flow - Ebb and Flow

My biggest pet peeve is when people let their kids run around unattended when they continually try to get in front of the tank im bagging fish out of,I usually will let the net drip on their heads. If you ever see a wet noggin on a kid running around in the lfs I just might be lurking around. insert evil laugh here

Haha. I've done the same thing, but instead it was from a specimen container.

My crazy goldfish guy came in today. He didn't hang out long but he was going on about Communist America. Then he said something that really stuck with me.

"Be like the Indians. Burn everything down, pack up your tent, & keep moving. Never stop moving."

I listened to a co-worker get into a heated argument with our general manager about our CLI scores. CLI scores are just the surveys they give to customers when they make a purchase.

Anyway- they got into an argument because he was telling her that not having things on the shelves negatively affects customer satisfaction & she was adamant that being out of stock or having a product in the stock room but not on the sales floor has no affect on customer service at all. Neither does having dirty tanks or dead fish in them.

She's the type to look down on you & tell you she started in retail at 16 & has over 25 years of experience so she is clearly superior at anything & everything.
