Automatic fish feeders

Anyone ever used one of these? Are they worth a hoot, is one better than another? I am getting some Dispar Anthias today and would like to find a way to keep these fed while I am at work etc. Any thoughts/suggestions on fish feeders would be great.

Thanks,

Allen

I've used the Aqua Chefs for pellets/dry food while gone for 4-5 days. My fish are all alive when I come back, but I'm sure some got short changed, as I usually make sure that everybody gets some when I'm there, and these just dump an amount of food in one spot. But if you just had one type of fish in a tank, it wouldn't matter.

I did look at that one, not sure how it would mount on my tank though. Also wondering how it would do long term. I found these, they are a little more $$ but are not supposed to clog up.

Anyone heard anything about these?

Hey JJ, didnt see your post before my reply:) That looks like a good one also, though about the same price as the Super Feeder. They have a "blemished" one available, think I may give it a shot.

I ordered 6 six of them, medium size 2-3". I almost ordered a couple more, but didnt want to overdo it. Thats a fairly big load to add on as it is.

The one you listed looks like it has a bigger drum to it. The way I mount it is set it on my bracing and drop it down in a 1.25" hole I'm thinking about mounting a feeder ring or something in there so the flakes don't go straight to the overflow. I haven't had a problem at all with the one I have. The only thing is that if the power goes out you have to reprogram it, it doesn't have memory.

Well, the Super Feeder is ordered, so hopefully it will do the trick:). It does hold quite a bit of food and while I dont see me doing this, you can add extensions to it to hold more. It doesnt have a built in timer, so I can run it with my AC3. The actual feed time is very adjustable though.

I am thinking of putting it on one of my end braces, right in front of a closed loop output, hopefully that will disperse the food and keep it from ending up all in one spot or just going into the overflow.

That's cool. They should add a little more excitement to your tank for sure. I'm hoping I can get about 10-12 Lyretails in total. I have two right now and they seem to be doing fine when I feed them once a day or every other day.

I actually wanted to get Lyretails, but they were always out of stock when I went to order them:rolleyes:

I know the Dispars are a little more challanging to keep, but I may as well give them a try. I am planning to add some more later on, but I want to see how they do and see what kind of impact they have on the tank. I'd like to have around 8-10 of them total. From what I have read, Dispars have to be fed small amounts very often throughout the day, a fish feeder is the only way I can think of to do that.

Just out of curiosity, what are you feeding your Lyretails?

That's what I'm doing now is testing to see how these two do before getting more.

The anthias eat what the others eat. A little mysis shrimp, cyclop-eeze, formula one flake, prime reef flake, formula 1 pellets and formula 2 pellets. I just switch off on the flakes and pellets though.

Well, the new fish are in, hopefully they will do well. I havent seen any Dispars in person for a while, they have some very nice color. I have heard they can be a little picky to get eating, so I ordered a bunch of different types of food today, I'm sure they'll go for something.

Mine don't seem interested in the flake yet. When I first got them the only thing they ate was mysis and ocean plankton.. They would taste everything but then spit it back out. Now they eat reef plankton, cyclopeeze (didn't try that at first) marine cuisine, and brine. Good luck with them

Yeah, I ordered some Cyclopeeze, figured they might go for that. I'll also pick up some more mysis, their arent many fish that wont eat that. Hopefully they will do some more swimming around today. It was kind of cool how they slowly formed a group. At first they all just scattered, of course, but then they started coming out. Their were two, and then three and so on, by the end of the day all six were huddled together in a corner. The good news is nothing is really picking on them, I think the safety in numbers is working here, my flame angel tries to go after them, but isnt sure which one to pick on:)

How many m/f did you get? I noticed on liveaquaria that you can't choose the gender for the Bartlett's.

They were like that the first few days I got mine. They eitherwould hide in the corner as a group or they hide in the rocks. Unfortunetly all but 2 of them got some sort of bacterial infection and one by one they died over the next week.

They arent Bartletts, they are Dispar's:), not that it really matters, because you are right, you cant really get M/F of either of them. My guess is they are all female(based on coloration), assuming they make it, one of them should morph into a male at some point.

Now I know why you wished me luck Lee, I sure hope these guys make it and if they dont it happens within the 14day guarantee!
