Back after 7 months

rkelman, since taking that photo I've placed the riser tube (cut in half) on the sponge filter. Almost overnight the ammonia is 0.

Funny observation yesterday. I fed BBS earlier in the morning before work, so upon returning home from work I noticed very few BBS in the tank. So I decided to feed the two fry some GP. I placed two very small pinches of GP 100-200 microns into the tank. Almost immediately, both fry turned on their sides and started to curl up and die. I rush over and started a 1 gallon water change, no dip (what did I have to loose). Within a minute they rolled over and started swimming again ...

Has anyone ever used GP (golden pearls from brineshrimpdirect.com) before ?

I'm glad you got the ammonia under control.. Now as for the GP I don't think the water change / dying fish / gp are all related. Possible coincidence.. Rolling over then a water change instantly helps.. shesh that sounds like oxygen depletion... again...

i was reading through Joyce Wilkerson's book again:rollface: last night; do you have that book?

anyway i read over 2 things that sound like what you described; she mentions "surface oils" which suffocates the larva if they come in contact with it.

She also stated that when young larva are learning to "surface feed" they turn the sides of their body to the surface. don't know if that helps at all but thought i would throw out some suggestions.

Yes I have the book. Need to read all of it. LOL

Well the problem is I'm almost positive, the GP. They sink to the bottom and curl up. I have not fed them anymore GP. I only have one large fry that has survived. He feeds only at the surface. Still on BBS.

lol; i know what you mean i keep reading & reading.
pages 206 & 212 cover the stuff i mentioned

i had thought about ordering the gp as well maybe i should not.

I think I will order the Reef Nutrition Otohime Starter Kit soon. Or crush some dry food as Bill stated in another thread.

OK ... Very bad day today. I left for work today there were about 200 fry in my larvae tank. Tonight around 7 ! Dead larvae covered the bottom of the tank.
:(

So I moved them up into my 5 gallon grow-out tank. I'm so close to hanging this little project up !

Enough bad news ! It picture time.

Once there were three.

Andy, don't give up! Patience is the key here (along with lots of rotifers) lol. I have not tried Golden Pearls...actually I was thinking of ordering some to see how well the fry like it. Maybe I'll wait! I've been feeding mine Otohime when they're ready for dry food. I ordered the sample kit from Reed and I like it. The smallest particle size (A) seems to be just right for the fry when they're coming off BBS.

Bummer agsansoo. That older guy should be eating crushed flakes or Otohime now. Size A can actually be used instead of BBS.

agsansoo, sorry to hear what happened; do you have any ideas as to what went wrong?

I think i might be placing an order with reed again as well i just wish they had a retail outlet at their store they are only a 30 minute drive from my house and i still have to pay for shipping.

How old were the GP's? They might have turned.

The Otohime is well worth getting ;) The "A" is small enough to eat once they start eating BBS, just a very light sprinkle 2 to 3 times a day.

I think the rotifers out paced the weak phyto I was using. The water was very clear in the larvae tank when I returned home yesterday. So starving rots equals dead larvae. The ammonia was also too high.

The GP was brand new ! Really wished Reed sold smaller portions of just Otohime "A". Oh well I need to call them today for sure.

Andy, I think Reed does sell the individual small packets of Otohime A...in the past it was only $12 but the sample kit has several different sizes and is actually a good deal for around $50. Since the fry step up to "B1" in a very short time, then the next sizes and so on, it's a good variety to have on hand for their growth.

Update:
Clutch 11 of eggs were to hatch out tonight. They came early. I checked them at 5:30am. They were all still on the rock. When I arrived home from work at around 4:20pm. The eggs were gone. :(

Is there any frozen food options ?

cyclopeze ;) Though they are slightly larger than the BBS, so thats for a few days after they've been on the BBS.
