Back after 7 months

Cheapest works for me at this point.

One more problem. One of my phyto cultures is not looking good. I forgot to turn the light on yesterday before I went to work. When I came home it looked dark green. So I ran the light all night long. This morning one of them (the e-bay culture) turned light milky green. Did it crash ?

The phyto that I bought on eBay a few months ago was terrible...I wouldn't waste the money again. I switched over to Instant Algae Nanno and don't have to worry about culturing phyto ever again. My rotifers are doing great on the Instant Algae.

Andy,

It does sound like that one culture is crashing. The milky color is typically the result of bacterial activity.

I doubt the ammonia spiked enough overnight to kill them. Day 4 it was more likely to be starvation. How much ammonia was the badge showing? As long as the tile is rough on one side that's really the only requirement. I agree that culture is crashing. I would start another with a quality culture. I know its frustrating but keep at it your doing well. I just had a thought.. Perhaps your phyto is the root of the problem.. I've hard of bad phyto causing deaths before...

The ammonia badge was at alarm. I'm starting two more cultures from FAF tonight. As for phyto causing deaths ... I didn't have enough phyto still, so I was using IA in the larvae tank.

Really? Wow that's fast. What was it at when you left it? Anyways I guess it doesn't matter at this point but I don't understand how you can get that much ammonia in such a short period of time.. How much Rotifers are you putting in the larvae tank? Your straining and rinsing them right? No water from the culture should be getting in the larvae tank. I'd say get your rotifers and phyto going strong before attempting to raise any more.

I'm not sure, it was cover with green slime from the instant algae. I was harvesting 1/4 of my two culture daily. Then enriching it with T.iso for one hour, then straining with fresh saltwater before placing it in the larvae tank. Tonight I harvested (2) 2 quart containers of rotifers from the larvae tank, before cleaning it out. It's always the same story, the maroon larvae are crawling with rotifers when they die.

Can I run the lights on my phyto 24/7 ? Will this speed up production ?

hmm. Are they getting fat silver bellies? You should be able to see how much fatter they get. No that won't help the phyto it needs a rest period. Time is what you need to get your phyto stocked up a bit. Then you'll find a happy medium so you have enough to get you through. With mine 5 pop bottles works out perfectly for me.

Yes, half were silver, bigger with round mid-sections. I thought for sure they would make it. I cleaned the the larvae tank last night. It had that green sludge all on the bottom of it. The water didn't smell. I think the dry food I was feeding the tank could have made the ammonia rise. Not a good thing to feed a tank without filtration, unless you are doing water changes.

I might let this next hatch go until I get my phyto quantities up to five bottles.

How much phyto are you putting in the larvae tank? It should be just enough to tint the water a light green. If you have that much slime in the bottom of your tank, I'm wondering if you're putting too much in there. How often are you cleaning the fry tank and doing water changes?

Are you using Amquel for the ammonia?

How much air are your running into the fry tank?

You mentioned about flake food. You shouldn't be feeding fry flake food for a few weeks. This will foul a tank badly especially if you don't clean it daily.

I been using instant algae, due to lack of live phyto.

No cleaning in the 5 days

I used Prime after ammonia spike. I heard Amquel stunts larvae growth.

One air stone with just a little air bubbles.

This is power Golden Pearls (50-100um) from brineshrimpderect.com. This is what I think was the ammonia problem.

Got to go very sparing with the dry foods. I only sprinkle a very, very thin layer of otohime when I feed dry to the larvae. It's also good to siphon debris anytime there is a enough debris accumulated on the bottom to siphon, sometimes it can be a daily affair.

OK ... I'm learning by trial and error. Mostly error ! :(
Next batch of fry is due to hatch out on Monday night. :)

I agree no dry food for a bit for sure. I start with crushed flakes when they are big enough to eat it. With mine after meta usually I start around 10 days trying to introduce it. Sounds like that and not siphoning may be the issue. Live and learn. Perhaps let this batch go if you can stand to :)

That's the hard part. I alway think this time might be different.

Well I pretty much let this batch go ! I placed the larvae snagger in the display Sunday night and only caught about ten larvae. Thinking I was a day early I restarted the pumps and went to bed. Woke up the next morning ... no eggs ! I'm so getting a a piece of tile today before they lay eggs again. One side note, when I turned the moonlights back on I saw my peppermint shrimps eating the eggs while the male maroon clown was resting in his anemone.

Update:
Seven out of the ten larvae I collected are still alive on this day 10 ! :D Excuse the bad photo.
