Hey all, wanted to say hi to all the folks I knew in the community before I dropped off the face of the earth this time last year. Nice to see so many old friends and new faces still pokin around the boards and in the hobby. Long story short, in Nov 2009 I was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer and obviously took a break from active participating in the hobby. I've had multiple surgeries and chemo over the past year and continued to live my life as best I could through all that. For now, thanks to all that modern medicine and some help from the big guy upstairs, I'm done with treatment and cancer-free. Before getting on with the reef stuff, I just wanted to remind everyone, even those of you who think you're young, to not ignore any prolonged troubles with your guts, and get screened if you're 50, or 10 years prior to the age of a parent who'se had colon cancer, whichever is sooner. It's not only an old person's disease, and please trust me, none of you want to go through advanced colon cancer treatment, the scope is much easier :).

Anyway, stories over I'm looking to "revamp" my reef tank over the next few months. I kept about half of my stock going over the last year, so I have some mature stuff, and my favorite fish thankfully are still with me. They survived in a basement horse trough over the summer when I bought a house and moved here, and now they're finally back in the tank and on display. My wife (got married too this year ;)) loves the tank and is really encouraging me to develop it so I've got a semi-clean slate and want to make it back to the beauty it once was.

Before I go diving back into livestock I want to make sure I have hardware to accomplish my goals. I've still got my 65g custom tank with a 20g sump and a mag 7 return pump on a small ocean motions for "some" alternating water flow, but it really isn't all that much. Also, a Koralia 3 for some extra flow in there. A modified re-circulating EuroReef handles my skimming, and twin 175watt reeflux 12K halides and a couple supplimental LEDs handle my lighting. All that stuff is ran by my ACjr (God bless that device for getting me through the last year). Before Cancer I was just about to dive into a home-made LED lighting setup, but those plans all got put on hold. I'd love to re-visit that dream. I would be surprised if a lot of things haven't changed in a year on that front as LEDs are such an emerging technology. Are there any off-shelf LED setups worth buying right now, or is it still the case that I could build something both more powerful and "worth it" myself? Money isn't too big a worry, but I will be looking for a DIY project over the winter and this would fit the bill, and something my electronics-oriented brain can easily wrap itself around. I don't want to spend gobs of money on something off-shelf that outputs less light/penetration than my halides. Also, what if anything has changed out there in terms of wavemaking or surge type flows? The MP40's, 15's, and 10's were just coming out last I knew. Are these still good options for flow/surge, or has something better hit the market? Livestock wise, most of my surviving corals are LPS (used to have quite the mix), and I think I'd like to continue going with LPS moving forward as I've always had the best luck with them.

Anyway, that was a gigantic post and I thank anyone who takes the time to read it and give an old friend some direction. I've missed the hobby a lot and am really excited to get back to it. Who knows what the future will hold, but I can't wait to get back into active fishkeeping. For now, it's just good to see everyone again.

Holy cow Mike!!! I'm glad to see you're back, but I'm sad to hear of your tribulations (including getting married :D, JK congrats on that too). Great news on your remission. This is a great time of year to pop back in and remind us all to take stock in our lives, loved ones, jobs, health, reef tanks  and the like.

There are some guys on here that have farted around with LED's, but mostly on nanos and as supplemental lighting. The big LED fixtures sort of fizzled out, I think there were patent issues as well as the overall cost. I'm sure you could grab one used for a fraction of what they were going for new a year or two ago.

We did a group buy on Vortechs last year, so a bunch of us are using them (although mine's still in the box) and the overall reviews have been positive.

Once again, glad to see an old friend back on the boards. I was just thinking yesterday about "who haven't I seen on here lately?", so it's interesting to see you back. My tank is under construction and my livestock is in a bin in the back room of ABC Reefs in Syacuse, BUT, anything you need, I'll try to lend a hand.

Good Things!

Congrats on kicking the big C's a$$. My wife is almost 2 years out from advanced ovarian cancer. Sorry I can’t help with the LED question.

Hey Mike!

Glad to see you back!

Lots of Vortech fans here, myself included.

RC user Der Willezurmacht (sp?) is your man for DIY LED lighting. Hopefully he'll chime in soon.

Again, I'm really glad to hear your good news!

Thanks for the well wishes guys. Those of you who've experience battling cancer know I'm still not out of the woods yet, but remission is surely a good place to be :).

Scott, how's the classroom tank doing? Still up and running? And Cully, please tell me you're still bieng a wiseass around here :)

A quick glance through various online retail outlets led me to see that Marineland is selling off-shelf LED fixtures. The relatively cheap price makes me wonder about the quality though...

Hi Mike,

glad to hear you are doing good.

Good point about the age thing! More and more young people seem to be affected by a form of cancer. one in my family is only 30 and she is fighting for her life(late diagnosis). Another friend in his low 30's is in remission right now (early diagnosis).

Anyways, when you are ready for some corals just give a shout.
I would give the LED's another year or so. This technology is changing so fast and improving a lot, i think it will be worth the wait.

Nico

Great to see you back Mike!!! As far as LED's go.... the AI Led's seem to be the best off the shelf available at this point. 2 of their modular units would cover your 65 pretty well, but you're looking at like $1000. Can't wait to bump into you sometime!!!!

The classroom tank is alive and well! It has its ups and downs, like any aquarium, but considering the fact that I'm away on weekends and school vacations, things are going well.

You can actually see it yourself (live) if you'd like: http://classroomreefcam.no-ip.org/

Click the 'Login' tab; username: rcuser ; password: aquarium; then click the 'Single' tab

There's a dropdown menu of preset camera positions. Things are out of focus today b/c the custodian put up the chairs and they're in the camera's field of view.

Hi Mike, Welcome back.

Congratulations on your marriage. My wife and I celebrated 42 years of marriage this year.
Glad you're beating C and thanks for sharing your experience . I'm overdue for my sceening and should know better.
My daughter has been fighting cancer since she was 15. She is now 37 and leading a full active life after multiple surgeries, chemo and radiation for lymphoma, breast cancer and a thryroidectomy. She has a wonderful appreciation of life and makes a point of living it. I am very thankful for the expert care she has received along the way , particularly the Docs in Strong M H's pediatric oncology group. Two years ago we celebrated Christmas in February since her mascetomy and recovery intruded on the holidays. She gave us all winter hats. Not pink ones ; these just say F... cancer. So I'm very happy you are back, married and picking up the reef hobby again and focusing on some of the good things life offers us..

A few years ago you gave me good advice on setting up my seio flow controller to accomodate korillas. It's still working great, btw.

I agree Willie is your man on l e ds . Joe at SWP has a couple of new led fixtures each over 3 foot by 2 foot tanks which look great. They run about $500. Don't know the manufacturer , but you may wan't to take a look.

Great story Tom, glad to hear your daughter is doign well too. Glad to hear that modification for the controller is still working, I remember that idea just sort of snapping into my head. Nice to know it wasn't just a crackpot guess ;)

Chris, lookin forward to seeing you too man

The prep is the worst-Like drinkin someone elses spit! 42 yr old here-lost my dad after colon cancer complications-good to see someone beat it! Congrats on making it back to the boards too!
