I am in the process of setting up a shark and ray tank and I was wondering if anybody has had any experience about the careing for them. I am pretty well knowledged on them but dont have experience so I was wondering if there were any tricks to help them thrive. THANKS A LOT!!

Um...isn't there a big shark/ray pond where you work? Heheh.

Good luck with it and of course, don't forget the pictures!!!

BEat me to it, I was thinking the exact same thing, lol.

Well, I believe what you would want would be a shallow table tank with a sandy bottom and no rocks in it. The ideal shape would be circular. I believe sharks and rays have trouble with corners so you would definitely want rounded corners. I imagine 300 gallons might be the minimum you would want with the ideal being 600+.

If you just went with a shark and not rays, you could get one of the sedentary cat sharks, Epaulette, Bamboo etc. that spend most of their time sitting in one spot. You could use a normal tank for those and could probably have some live rock in it.

As far as care and feeding, your best bet is probably your co-workers as Iowa Pet Foods is the only place I know of that has sharks.

I still don't understand why people want sharks in aquariums, unless you have a HUUUGE tank it just doesn't seem right to house them in a normal aquarium. Are you sure you are ready to feed these things? Im no expert but it seems to me in order to have a healthy shark you would have to feed the crap out of it which means lots of water changes, so you also gotta figure in the price of salt and by the time you add it all up you might as well just left that poor shark in the ocean where it belongs......

Just my 2 cents worth.

I do have a big part in taking care of the shark tank at Iowa Pet Foods but the tank is so established and such a large system that it doesnt take a whole lot of time and work, where as a new tank and only being 150 gal. total is going to be a little more precise and time consuming and probably has some tricks to it. Just to clear it up waverz and tibbs2 the question was directed to people with experience and thats obviously not you so dont respond.

Carter,

I don't know what your problem is... You asked for help and you recieved some great advice, but chose to attack two of the more useful answers. Tibbs is correct that you need a large tank and he agreed that you chose a good shark for your plans. Why attack him? Waverz obviously has more ray experiance than most of us on this forum, albiet freshwater, but some of the same rules still apply. By attack him you have now cut yourself off from another source of information... You have also made it very likely that you will not recieve any further help from the rest of the members due to your rude behavior. Your employer would also be pretty interested to know that you are making a scene infront of the largest collection of his saltwater customer base...

If you cannot take criticism or alternate ideas, just take your close minded ideals and move on please.

You really must not enjoy your job.... If your employer happens to be directed to this site you should expect to hit the unemployment line faster than you can post another rude response.

sorry waverz and tibbs2

sorry waverz and tibbs2

it was actually reefreak1 and zltful that had to make the comments about the shark and sting ray tank at my work as if it was mine. I am sorry for targeting that comment towards you two waverz and tibbs2.

I don't know of any users of this board who have a shark in their tank. You might want to try the Fish Only and Aggressive Tanks forum.

Whoa...I didn't attack you. Just figured that being involved with such a tank, you would have access to one of the best resources locally to educate you on setting up and establishing a shark/ray tank. Seems to me, I have bought quite a bit of stuff from Iowa Seascapes over the last 4 months but I can assure you that with this type of attitude, I am done shopping there.
Frankly, keeping a shark in anything short of a pond of any type is plain stupid. Can it be done? Of course it can be. Can it be done successfully? Depends on what your definition of succesful is. To me, a successful shark tank isn't going to 1. shorten the life span of the shark significantly. 2. Is going to provide an enviroment in which the shark can express it's naturally occuring predatory instincts.
And I think you will fine that not a whole lot of people who are successful at keeping sharks have them in that small of a tank.

But hey, it's your money. Spend it like you want to.

My money...well, let's just say that you have made me regret supporting your job with the ~$600 I have sent that way in the last 4 months.

Im not sure why you guys keep trying to threaten me about my employer, I would love to see somebody make a comment to him about this site and see what he has to say back to you. This site is made up of people that only do purchases on the internet and dont care to help locally owned small business' will be his exact words to you.

Im done responding to this message but I thought how this site worked was that if you wanted some helpful hints that you ask and random people will respond, My employer was right this site is a joke.

Well, then why did he hire you? Seems to me that you are here for some reason. Is your boss not a good enough LOCAL resource for you to take advantage of?

And I didn't threaten you with your boss. You and people like you are the reason I choose to not do business locally. You think that because you overcharge and understock that locals just have to capitulate to that. Well, hate to break the news to you sonny Jim, but i would rather drive to Hung's or order online so I don't have to deal with employees like you at the LFS.

And if you will go back and read through the posts...I wished you good luck and requested pictures. I never once attacked you until you felt the need to attack me.

Enjoy your weekend.

That is sad if that is truely his view. If not, you have just damaged his reputation even more. I would be willing to say that everyone on this board buys things locally. I would also be willing to bet that 95%+ bought their tanks locally. The exceptions being the huge 200+ gallon tanks. We all need supplies and when we need a few things or need things fast, they come locally. If buying in bulk and you have time to wait you are stupid not to shop around. Many local fish stores support our club and we inturn support them. We get discounts on salt and treated with fair prices, magically we are spending money in that owner's store. We get raped on prices and verbally abused by ingnorant/uneducated staff, magically that store goes out of business... Simple business principals. Treat your customers well and they will be loyal, screw them once to make a quick buck and you might as well close your doors. Your employer also sounds like the individual that sees it as his right to have our business because he opened a store, unfortunatly the world does not owe anyone anything, you have to earn it.

If anyone from Des Moines could pm me the phone number to this store or call them and direct them here for me I would appreciate it.
