How's those babies doing?

so far so good...

Just fed them some baby brine last night. Worked late so they didnt get fed until 1230am so I knew they were hungry. They are still huddled in two separate groups and the one "lone ranger". Lately Lone Ranger has not been eating so I am a bit concerned for him. The others seem active and healthy, have not noticed any aggression yet other than an occasional nip.

Still feeding them live baby brine and alternating with cyclopeze. Also recently got a large dose of live rotifers and they seemed to like those.

I was going to try and get a pic showing all of them together during a rare time when they cooperate with the camera.

Thanks to all for the interest and will try to keep updating. :lolspin:

well, I hope these fry grow quick 'cuase I have another batch on the way ! Last night feeding saw one of the cardinals in the corner not eating, sure enough he has the "bulge". Three weeks to the day of getting this current batch. Not sure if it is the same male.

I am now thinking of setting up a separate breeding tank, maybe two. Also starting some rotifer and brine shrimp tanks. One thing nice is my fish room is 15x20 so I have plenty of room. Get an assembly line going here !

When I was researching the possibility of setting up a station for growing them out on a consistent basis most that I read said that if you had a pair that was consistently breeding you would need 5 grow out tanks. The logic being that by the time the oldest batch was at a good sellable size you would need their tank for the next batch to release.

My set up was going to be the m/f in a 20 long by themselves and 5 grow out tanks all connected to a 37 gallon sump/fuge.

It was modeled after some of the clownfish stations on here. Now those guys really have this down to a science.

Since you've got another batch, Would you be interested in selling any of these once they get big enough?

It will be awhile but absolutely. I have already had a few local inquiries that have first dibs, but if the pair keeps going like this I am sure there will be plenty. I should have some to sell from this first batch if things keep going well.

A rare shot of all 14 together.

I am planning on getting the breeding tanks setup before the next batch comes in 3 weeks. I am thinking of adding 3 tanks, ( roughly 10-15 gals each ) the first would hold the M/F pair, the second tank for Fry and the third would be for larger Fry and also a frag tank. I would also have the large fuge for any bullies that need a time out . This would all be plumbed together with my main system sump. This is mainly so I dont have to add another sump, heater, filter, ect... However if I start having problems I may separate the two systems later.

I also want to start an artemia culture. A LFS has a 15 gal tank for this and looks pretty easy to keep going. I will do something similar. I will also continue with the baby brine shrimp hatchery.

Thats my plan anyway.

Congrats on the fry

What a week !!

Tuesday I was tinkering with the tank ( my first mistake ) and I bumped my return pump, which is external to the sump. I noticed a small trickle leaking from the 1" outlet coupler on the pump. It was on very tight, so I figured I would shut it down, remove it and replace the teflon tape and be good to go. It was on too tight and broke off trying to unscrew it. By this time the small trickle was a full blown fountain. I shut the ball valve but of course that wouldnt budge either. You can guess what happened when I tried to force it shut..the handle broke off in my hand. Great. So I then had to shut my DT drain valves and drain my sump, about 60 gallons into the storm drain to stop the flood. Long story short I was able to borrow a Reeflow Dart return pump from a local reefer, and a quick run to home depot for parts. I was able to get everything back up and running by 1am. Nothing was lost but was a crazy night. At least the wife was gone and didnt witness the fun.

Fry are still doing fine, actually last count I saw 17 ! so I guess a few were hiding all this time. They are around 3/4 to 1 inch long now. I am seeing aggression now. They are more spread out and do not stay together in 2 groups like they did. The tank is big enough that it seems to keep aggression down, but I can definitely see some bullying.

been gone for awhile but back now. Fry doing fine and last count was at 18, I am trying to get them to eat frozen with little success but they eat live BBS very well. I alternate feedings 2x frozen for every 1x BBS. They will eat the frozen but I can tell an obvious difference when I put BBS with how fast they eat it. I am feeding 2x a day.

I am in process of setting up 2 breeder tanks that will be plumbed into system. They will not be ready for the next batch of fry ( male holding new fry and will be at 3 weeks friday ) so I will put those in the fuge in one of those breeder "bags" until tanks are ready.

Aggression spiked a week or so ago but I dont see much any more. An occasional nip on rare occasion is all. They hang in 3 groups now on separate sides of tank.

hope to get some pics soon.

It looks like having all that space has made a huge difference in your survival rate. Congrats.
What size breeder/grow out tanks are you going to be using?

Thanks , John. I plan on 2 tanks 4' long 1.5' deep and 1' wide about 45 gallons. Odd size but that way they fit in a corner by the existing sump. This way I can easily plumb them into main system. I like the idea of everything plumbed into main system, since I know water quality in breeder tanks will be stable, and with my large skimmer and fuge I am not concerned w/ extra bioload. If I run out of room with the two breeder tanks I can always use the fuge.

Last night was "frozen night" since my batch of BBS werent ready. I fed them cyclopeze, frozen rotifers, "reef chili" and a few drops of vitamin supplement from kent called "roe". They seem to be eating the frozen a bit more eagerly now, not sure if they are acquiring a taste for it or because they were very hungry. I think feeding only 2x a day helps force them to eat whatever you put in. I also think having very low flow helps, since they dont have to spend needed energy fighting the current, and thus can thrive with less feedings. ( My 75 gal fuge is almost stagnant with approx 60 gph flow ).

still trying to get pics maybe tonight.

the biggest mistake i made was getting mine on frozen to early then only feeding them frozen lost like half make sure when you do get them eating the frozen still to offer bbs at least for awhile
I wish there was simple instructions for these guys but there isnt .
raising them to full grown is pretty tedious and unforgiving

This is fantastic! It's rare to see Bangai being bred. I typically see clownfish breeding threads. It's great that you've raised them up to this point, and they were your fish batch too!

here is a video taken this evening while they were eating some baby brine w/ cyclopeze. At the end is a shot of the male sitting in his usual corner of my DT with his mouth full of more babies. Tomorrow is 3 weeks so they are due any day.

Thanks for the kind comments. So far they are doing well, they are about 7/16 to 1 inch now.

late to this thread - but just wanted to say - thanks for the vid and sharing. Great job!

I wish clownfish fry would eat bbs at hatching...no such luck, i have to wait for meta first before they are even big enough to handle that.

been gone for awhile but wanted to update.

Thanks Phil519. Yeah I like that about the cardinals, sometime I would like to try raising clownfish when I am ready for the challenge.

All 18 fry still alive and eating well, going on 7 weeks. Growth has not been as fast as I was expecting but I think that is due to only feeding them 2-3x per day. They are eating frozen now but like the smaller size, less than 300 micron. I still feed BBS just not as often, every other day or so.

Aggression has almost totally disappeared now, they all have their own preferred spots in the tank in 4 groups. When lights out they all head to the one corner that gets a little ambient light from my DT ( my fuge has reverse lighting ) and as soon as lights are on they all head back to their favorite spots. I think the large tank is the best way to beat aggression issues IMO.

The male released his 2nd clutch this past weekend so I have 23 more fry. I put them in a "breeder box" that is in the same fuge as the other clutch and they are eating well. I will try and feed these more often than the first group, see if they grow faster. I am just not sure if I am ready to start getting up early every morning to feed fish.

pics to come later....

going on 8 weeks now, still no losses but trying to get them to eat frozen. They will nip at it but thats about it. For the past week I have been only feeding BBS once a day, in the morning and after work I try feeding frozen. ( cyclopeze, daphnia, Otohime C1, and flake. Eventually they will go for it.

second pic is batch # 2 going on 2 weeks, and a shot of my fuge with the breeder box in upper right.
