banggaii 1hour old

very cool. I have a male carrying eggs right now. If my estimates are correct, they should be ready in about another 2 weeks. What technique did you use to get the male to release the fry?

congrats on keeping all those little guys alive. they look great.
Thanks !

They look great. When are you going to add the little ones?

Thanks John. Within the next week I will have to, since they are outgrowing the box. Trouble being that I am trying to get the 1st ones on freeze dried but the babies are not ready and need lots of BBS. I also have a fuge section in my sump (15 gal ) that I am considering moving the babies in, it is low flow but I just would have to put screens on the outlet so they dont get sucked into pump.

that would be bad.

Congrats and you are on your way. Your male should release when ready, best to wait. However mine went over 4 weeks both times. In that case catch him in a net, hold it on the surface so he still has a little water to swim but not much and gently shake him a few times and he will spit them out a few at a time. He wont eat right away but after a day feed him well. Good luck

Last night after my weekly water change saw the pair in their usual spot, in the corner behind LR doing the mating dance. It was the first time I saw them and found it very interesting. They were doing this for several hours. Below is a video if interested.

It has been only 2 weeks since they male released the last batch and he is right back in it again. I heard it is good to separate them once in awhile to give the male a rest, maybe after this next clutch I will do that. I gotta get that breeder setup going !

John, This weekend I pickup up a 10 gallon and some plumbing for a temporary breeder tank for clutch #2 that will by me some more time until the system is up and running. I am thinking having them in a separate tank will be easier to feed

Excellent thread- my question- how can you tell if the male is 'holding' if you cannot see the mouth, lol?
My pair have done the 'dance' several times, but they are always facing the back wall of the tank, and if I try to get the camera closer, the darn buggers slowly turn and face the other way- like playing peek-a-boo, lol.
I am thinking he may be holding, as he is looking bulkier, bulgy- but can't get a clear pic of his mouth.
Your babies look AWESOME!! Great Job :)

Sounds to me like He is holding eggs. If he wont eat, then he is holding. Keep the male as stress free as possible and you are good to go. Figure on having fry in 3-4 weeks. Congrats !

Thanks for the comments Kobelka. This is my fist go at this and I am very happy with how things are going so far.

Nice job. Great info. I need to get another pair of Banggai. I was able to get them to spawn the male either ate the eggs or I'd lose them before they were saleable size

:celeb3: If I could have him holding, lol, I will consider it a late b-day present from the pair! lol! I am definitely not trying to stress him out, I walk up slowly or , lol, sit across the room and zoom in with the camera. I am not sure what would 'spook' him into spitting anything out IF he is holding, so yes, thankyou for the heads up- trying to keep him 'calm' - the female is extremely guarding of him also..... if she sees me, even if I am feeding, she will dart toward me, then race back to him, circle him, corral him in their corner, then they sit back to back with him facing the wall and her facing me. I am enjoying your thread, and others here regarding these fascinating little striped guys :) Thanks for sharing your info!

Noticed some interesting behavior on the 2nd clutch yesterday when I was feeding them BBS, not sure if it was SFS. As they all were eating one suddenly darted around VERY fast, hitting a few others and then just as suddenly stopped and lay dead, along with several others that it hit. I was watching them lay there not moving and after 5 min or so they started swimming again like nothing ever happened. I have seen it one other time since. None have died yet so not sure if it is SFS or what. I have not seen this at all with the first clutch.

This weekend I started building the breeder system. It will be a separate 10 tank system consisting of (8) 10 gallon growout tanks and (2) broodstock tanks, skimmer, a 50 gallon fuge and UV sterilizer. I will try and post pics later.

here are a few pics of the fry, the 1st clutch are now 1 1/2 inches and the 2nd are about 5/8. I hope to be able to sell some in a few weeks if all goes well.

here is a pic of what will be my breeder setup. The stand is almost complete, I will brace it up a bit more. I hope to get the tanks this weekend. As stated earlier it will consist of (8) 10 gal growout tanks and (2) broodstock tanks, separate from my main system. Eventually I want to separate the broodstock tanks on their own system.

for now it will be all cardinals but I plan on also trying clownfish or perhaps mandarin.

Where did you buy your banggai? Are they cb or wild caught ?

I bought them at a LFS, Nebraska Aquatics and I believe they were wild caught. I picked up 6 at random hoping to get a pair and got lucky.

BTW they fry are doing well and getting close to being able to go. They are 1 1/2 inches long and eat frozen very good - brine shrimp, bloodworms and mysis. They like brine shrimp the best. I still have to shave the food since they dont like the larger pieces, I figure that will change soon.

I did lose one last week, it wasnt eating and breathing fast, one day it died. That was my first loss so I have 17 now from 1st clutch. 2nd clutch eating BBS well and still have all 23.
