Barracuda in Captivity

Anyone ever keep a Barracuda with any success?
Does it eat sps? smaller fish, etc.?

I think these gusy are pretty agressive but wanted to see if anyone has any luck with them?

To they stay near the rockwork or swim up in the water column? Thanks

we had one at a store I used to work at. when we got it, he was around 12-14" long. about a year later I went back to visit and he was about 2' long. It was in a ~800-1000 gal pond (indoor) with some sharks and large morays. they got rid of him because stupid people putting their fingers in the tank and getting bit.

Even though there was signs all over the place "do not stick hands in pond" people dont understand that these animals bite.

one guy had to go to the hospital for 7 stitches....idiot.

so anyway, yes they are doable, but I dont recommend it.

well.. you cant fit one in ur 127g. cube..BUT they do eat smaller fish...im not sure about corals though

The one I am considering is about 4" long. I think it is too much of a risk, but would be neat

it would out grow your tank in 2 months....not to mention the swimming room it needs.

Barracudas are not good aquarium subjects, mainly due to their ferocity (and need for live food) and potentially quick growth rate (in addition to other habits) and swimming needs. Besides, Sphyraena barracuda gets around 6' long . I don't think it is right to even purchase these animals, as hardly anyone has the tank to support one. Most public aquaria won't accept them, either.

Barracudas are pretty tasty - if it outgrows your tank you could just eat it

My LFS had a 1600 gallon FO tank with a 2-3 FT barracuda. They sold it to convert that tank into another 1600 gallon reef!! It was impressive, I think it ate something like 20 goldfish a day...
