Beach Rock?

I am lucky to be on spring break in south Florida atm and I have finding a wide variety of rocks and coral fragment washed up on the beach.

I am just getting started on my reef tank. My rock should be done cooking in the brute at home when I get back.

Is there any reason I shouldn't use some of the treasures I am finding. And what should I do to prep them before adding them to the tank?

Thanks

If they are found on the beach and dry, I think you are OK to take them, but I'd double check on that. If they are in the water they are considered live rock and it is ILLEGAL to take any! Even with a Florida Saltwater fishing license the rule is that legal soft corals need to be separated from the rock when harvested. And the fines can be substantial. There is a lot of good rock that can be found all over south Florida, the state is made of old coral. Lots of people here line their gardens with native old coral rock. But if it's in the water, it's illegal. Not that people don't do it, knowingly or not. But if you are at the beach and get caught with it, it could be expensive and you don't even get to keep the rock! Just offering the warning. I don't want your adventure in Florida to turn ugly.

I've found some pretty cool looking rock on beaches and I have them in my tank. Doesn't hurt anything, so have at it! But follow Ron's advice, only take what is already washed up on shore...not from the water.

Folks please don't do this. We have millions of visitors to our beaches every month and if everyone took home a rock or two there would be nothing left. If you want some base rock for your tank go to any garden supply in the state and get a truck load for $65 take it home and sell it to your friends for a dollar a lb. Our local economies rely on tourist dollars but at the end of the year we never have enough money for beach reclomation and cleanup.

Not to mention that FWE have the biggest jurisdiction and power in the state. They have the power to confiscate your car, boat and anything else that was used in the commission of the felony if they choose. It happens all the time and It is just NOT worth it!

Pleas respect this fragile ecosystem so we will have it to share with the generations to come!
