Beached Whale

I save turtles too.

If the calf is less than a year old, it hasn't even been weened off of milk yet, so it really won't survive which is sad but reality. And they drink about 100 gallons a day.

Weaning is more like 5 to 7 months and if its a Humpback at 30' it is most likely weened. Not sure about the length heard different reports.

Anybody hear any updates?

I am also curious about any updates. I was gonna make a trip out there to take some pictures and see it but my heart does not allow me to go out there and see such a beautiful innocent animal die.

I was there last night, and it was still there. You could tell it was having a hard time breathing, and it definitely wasn't as active as it was the day before. It was about 20ft long, I wouldn't say that it was even close to 30ft, a baby for sure. It was sad to see it there in the shallows just waiting to starve. And I could be wrong, but I read that they drink milk for up to a year.

I just got the word that it's 25' long. They are now saying that the whale was dying before coming to shore(not sure how they know?). So it sounds like its just a matter of days. So sad!

I just read that they have already attempted to sedate and euthanize the whale but they have been unsuccessful so far. It really is sad...

there's a newsday article about it in today's paper - page A2. Nothing we don't already know, but interesting to see, never-the-less.

Excuse my ignorance but what is the problem with taking an elephant gun or something and putting the poor thing out of its misery?? The powers that be prefer to let it suffer a couple days? If it is going to die anyway I don't see the problem with this. Is it fear of PETA or something?

I said the first morning when I showed up that they should just come at night and kill the thing, it has turned into a public relations nightmare for the Riverhead Foundation. I heard that they had someone in from Mass. with equipment better suited to euthanize it. Not sure if it worked or not, but they are going to open it up on the beach and figure out what was wrong with it and then bring it to the dump instead of just burrying it. Last time they burried a whale we had a serious number of sharks off shore .

According to Newsday it appears that they have used a rifle in an attempt to euthanize the whale...let's hope it worked and the whale is no longer suffering.

Last I heard today it was still alive; kind of amazing that it could survive for 4 days in the surf.

I heard they burried it right on the beach, not sure if it is true or not, but it was from a reliable source at work.
