Benefits of cmas

What are the benefits of joining cmas? I was planning on joining at the last swap but was told by x cmas members the only benefit was getting into swaps free, and having first dibs on frags, and a backstage pass to the shedd.

I was told there aren't very many seminars and knowledge is shared here at rc. (Which is free)

I was told it was like a high school click. While standing in line to get in that was kind if the feeling.

This thread isn't to kick up dust or start a rant but to give reasons to join the club and dispell myths about it.

CMAS and other clubs are all about creating a community of hobbyist together to share information and knowledge. CMAS has many benefits so obvious and some not so much.

First off CMAS is responsible for this local forum on RC and indirectly the creation of other local forums due to members getting banned from here. There would not be a local online presence or forum if it were not for CMAS. The Chicago saltwater aquarium scene would not be the same if CMAS was not here. I have been on this forum 10 years and CMAS's forum has been here the entire time. It has given me the opportunity to meet 100's of hobbyist over the years. Guys that I learned from, and been given lots of great deals and information from.

Secondly 100's of local events and at least 2 swap meets a year would not have occurred. There would have been no local swaps if CMAS did not exist. Most people would not have had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at the Shed if it were not for the club. Most people would have just bought all their stuff from stores and there would be a lot less local trading and fragging.

The biggest thing is the ability to network and meet great people who have the same interest as me. The best part of CMAS is to be able to go to meetings and talk fish with guys that actually want to learn and talk about the hobby. I have made lots of friends that I would not have made if it were not from the club.

The club is what you want it to be. If you are not willing to go to monthly meetings or events then the club may have a limited purpose for you. I am the president of the Rockford Reefers and we do not charge dues but the requirement to be a club member in our club is to attend meetings. We do this because we feel the main benefit of being in a club is to be involved in it. This is where we exchange ideas, learn from each other and create friends who are willing to help out when you need help in this hobby.

The club may have had some leadership issues over the year but its benefits far out weigh those issues. Leading a club is the most under appreciated thing. It is very time consuming and unpaid and generally done by guys who just want to help people out and improve the hobby experience for others. Next time you see the CMAS board you should thank them for setting up events like the upcoming swap.

I just joined 2 weeks ago. I didnt know what actually came with the membership, but I figured I surf this forum so much and gain so much knowledge from it that even though this site was free I should contribute to someone.

It would be a lot easier to make the meetings if they werent a hour and a half away lol.. it would be cool if they ran the meetings in different towns every month so other people would show up.

Thanks for the reply goat.

I understand and appreciate the foundation cmas supplied for the forum, and advent of trading frags and networking. However, what have you done for me lately? I don't belong to cmas and I am able to network on this site, buy goods, and pick brains of experienced reefers.

Lake burro:
i feel the same as you, as if you just throw some money in to join just donate.....but not everyone feels that way.

Dope:
Hope someone posts something, the pages on cmas site doesn't really list out benefits, nor sell itself.

You can look at it many different ways. I'm not a member yet, but I look at it like a lfs. I don't mind paying an extra 5-10 dollars on certain items because I usually talk the owners ear off and play 20 questions in attempts to learn more. The higher cost is information fee to me. The Internet can make your head spin sometimes. I've learned a great deal from this forum and try to help the best I can whether its pif or anything else. I could continue to use it for free but I don't mind paying a fee for what they provide. I guess i could consider it tithing

Joining CMAS has many benefits and will have even more in the very near future. The club is run by the membership, so benefits are directly proportional to how much the membership wants to put in to make the club as great and beneficial to all.

With that I have answered this question more in depth
HERE if your interested.

I look forward to more input and ideas.
Thanks

CMAS President

So the conversation is moved to cmas dot net for members only to discuss? Hmmm

Anyone members besides the board want to say why they joined and what they get out of it?

He didnt move it to exclude people, but to keep it organized, just sign up

In case you want to read it, it's right here

When asked the question, "What will I get from CMAS if I sign up for a membership?" how do I respond?

Well, I guess the best way is to say what I personally get out of CMAS.
I would like other members to post here....What do you get out of being in CMAS??

The best benefit I get personally is the ability to help a newbie in the hobby to keep the animals in their systems alive and well.

I also ask that anyone who have been over to see my setup, ask questions, and get advise from me to post a quick thank you, just to see....even though a thank you is never what I am looking for.

To be involved with others, meeting great people willing to help others, and to learn how genuinely helpful, friendly, and loving people live is a great benefit to membership. Sticking with people who live how you would want to live will always rub off on you.

I am in the process of starting a Mentor-ship Program with CMAS, where members will be able to link up with a willing mentor near their home to see their set ups, get advice, watch exactly how they do the things they do to keep their systems healthy like: Water changes, water quality test, routine, etc. I feel seeing an actual set up and learning from people who have setups we like and want will be much more beneficial than siphoning through all the "online experts" on the forums how may or may not have any experience of live animals for that matter.

Is that something that would be a benefit?

Members also have free access to various events, other than the swaps, the club has and is planning to have throughout the year.

We are currently working on a few local fish store events, as will as trips up to the good Dr's and down to Inland Aquatics for live tours tours.

Some other things we are working on are more online meetings and/or hangout and web based webinars for education and live question/answer sessions with club, local, and national/international experts.

Any of these ideas sound like good benefits?

All this will not happen from one, two, or even three peoples input!

Not to use the phrase, ask not what CMAS can do for your, but what you can do for CMAS to be its best, but this holds true. Not necessarily for every member or newbie, but if you really want to get to know people, mentors, experts, etc. the best way to do that is to be involved.
That is how you can receive the most benefits form our CLUB.

More to follow....

The discussion is not in the members only forum....just register as a user....But I guess you would have know that if you did not ***-u-me ;) and took action to find out.

I clicked to respond, but had to sign up. Didn't know I could just register, figured I had to join to post on the thread.

I wish I knew what is bleeped out, hope your not being a smart donkey.

I joined mostly for the free frag swap entry and the idea that I might go to a meeting or a special event occasionally. Got free entry into the first swap and haven't been to any meetings or events cause they are generally further north and I don't want to drive that far to a boring meeting.

I feel like I can be just as involved with other reefers by being active on this and the other Chicagoland reef forum.

Sorry on the bleep...I just was making a comment about assuming....not trying to make a personal attack. ;) I appreciate the input. ;)
