Interesting that after three years, still no consensus that one type is 'better' than another. I'd be quite happy to replace my main return pump (currently a PW200) but there doesn't yet seem to be a well built, affordable DC alternative that will provide the oomph I need. Replaced my CL pump with the Vectra, and been happy with it so far; and a long time user of the Vortechs.
I think much depends on application and implementation. We all know no two tanks are ever alike. If I had a basement anymore I'd certainly be setting up my sump down there and doubt even an Abyzz DC pump would serve up the head and flow that I'd need. A Pan World or Iwaki would probably be in the cards. If you don't need to pump much more than the average 4-5 feet from stand to top of tank though I think DC pumps can be attractive.
Then start throwing in how well someone runs their plumbing. The AC pumps that perform well with high head pressure are probably better for novices who put 90's in everywhere without a thought as to how that affects their pump performance.
I still can't make up my mind on what route to go for my 220. I really don't want much flow through my 40 breeder sump so I don't need a monster pump. My main concern with all of the DC pumps is that there isn't much in the way of history on them. Yes, Abyzz has a 10 year warranty, but I have a hard time justifying the cost at this point. Ecotech is appealing from a value standpoint but I'm not as sold on their quality and support as I was a couple of years ago. But, the DC pumps tend to have a great reputation for being quiet. Working from home full time, with my office in the same room as the tank(s), noise is important. But then, my Eheim 1262 really isn't that loud when running lol!
At least we have multiple decent to good choices. Safe choice IMO is a tried and true AC like Eheim, PW, Iwaki, or even Danner. Slightly riskier choices would be one of the current crop of reputable DC pumps from the likes of Ecotech, Royal Dragon, maybe Reef Octo, and of course, Abyzz. Abyzz mitigates much of the risk with a great warranty but you have to believe that they'll be around to honor it and still need a backup in case of failure.
What I'm not willing to risk is any pump with a questionable reputation in regards to quality/performance/reliability. Return pump is too important even with a backup as vacations happen. I'll probably go DC because of noise and go with an AC for backup.
