Best skimmer for a first timer

Save your money and get a Quality skimmer . Also buy one thats rated for a larger tank , so when you upgrade you'll not have to buy another .
I got a Euro reef . Very happy and it will last .
Don't buy JUNK .....
Thanks

I trust 5000 dollars worth of coral in my tank on my asm for over a year will no problems. By the way asm use the same sedra pump as euro reef and are a split off from the euro reef company. In my opinion they work just as well at half the price.

I'm not saying the asm skimmer is junk . I'm saying, buy a quality skimmer. Whichever way he decides . I went the Euro way . Better quality , better built .

C'mon guys. He did say "not trying to mortgage the wife and kids for a skimmer"

That leaves ER and Deltec out of the options.

IMO the skimmer is 1 of the most important pieces of equipment . If he trys to save a few bucks now he'll end up buying a better product later . AMS like stated earlier
"pay me now or pay me later"

if you want you can do what i did and right now im using the coralife 125 gal. super skimmer ( which in my opinion has been working great ) which was very affordable until i can save enough for a really nice skimmer like a euro . once i save enough ill use the super skimmer for the quarantine tank:)

i bought it at my lfs who matches prices and smith&fosters had it for around $ 119.99 and shipping would have been around $ 10.00 so i paid 130.00 plus tax . that lfs is using 3 of them on 3 different single reef set ups in the store and they have been working great for them.

My AquaC EV 180 kicks @ss. I have it skimming my 120 gallon reef tank and it's a real class act. And it doesn't look cheap. For some reason, Euroreef and ASM just look cheap. Thin plastic, etc.

An AquaC has excellent support. I was emailing them every day for the first weeks. They have great staff. And like I said everything is so sturdy. No flex tubes or other cr@p like that to deal with.

My 2 cents

I have an ASM g2 that i did the recirc mod and gatevalve mod and as i said in another thread....this thing really sucks out some serious reef gravy. Unmodded...the g2 is a great skimmer.... added the gatevalve mod and got a great skimmer that was easier to regulate..... got the balls to drill it and added the recirc after hearing all the hype..... whoa!!! stand back!! Your liable to get sucked into the collection cup yourself!   I think the recirc almost doubled its production. Drilling two 1 3/4" holes into a $250 piece equipment will definitely make the sweat bead on your forehead..... but i can tell ya.... you wont regret it!

For the money and performance i dont feel that ASM can be beat. My only complaint... be it ever so small... is that the seals (o-rings) between the segments leak which will make some salt creep accumulate on the outside of the skimmer. Does this make a damned bit of difference if the skimmer is in the sump (as it should be).....NO!! Euro-reefs are said to have fixed this problem... but for all the extra $.... i think i can take 2 seconds out of my day every week or so to knock the salt off, back into my sump.

I have a g3 in my 38g sump from my 100g display and I did the mods, it seems to pull a good amount of skimmate. I have five fish, a shrimp, a few mexican turbo's, 3 sps, 1 lps, 2 leathers, with chaeto in the sump, and it looks as though I could put in more live stock with out any real problems. Just to repeat what other have siad about the g3's for the $$ you can't beat them, are they the best? NO, but they work well and don't cost half what similar types of skimmers do.
