Best skimmer for a first timer

I bought an ASM mini "G" yesterday, brought it home, hooked it up, and it filled the cup within minutes.....colored water, about like weak tea.

I dumped that, started it back up, and had a half cup of coffee colored skimmate within an hour.

I dumped that before I went to bed, and this morning, I have some very dark, skimmate, only about a 1/4 of the cup. This thing has no way of adjusting airflow, but seems to be right on target for pulling skimmate, and my tank is very clear....

I got it at Salty Critter for $119.00.....

Two questions: I have a 58g cube, what is this skimmer rated for? This is the one they reccomended, but there is nothing on the box or skimmer specifying what water volume it is rated for??

I have previuosly had a skimmer, but this one included absolutely no directions whatsoever.... is this normal for skimmer companies? If I had been a complete newbie, I would've been lost!!

It is an in-sump skimmer, but for the money, I as of right now, have absolutely NO complaints!!! FYI for you beginner skimmer people!

ASM has not released at rating for that skimmer yet. It was just released around mid-December, I believe, so it is fairly new to the market. Give it some time as I am sure they are testing it on several different tank to get an accurate rating. Here is a link to contact ASM and ask them anything you want to know about the skimmer.

spankerbob,

I dont think that is true. A dry skim is always better. It will remove more bad stuff from your tank.

Check with Randy in the chemistry forum to double check this but I think my statement is true.

Regards,

Pat

Skimming wet or dry is going to pull the nasty stuff out. The only difference is how much water comes out with it. Niether is better than the other.
