BigDaddyD1992's 40g breeder 20g long sump build!!! Pictures!!!

I'm considering using it. I have not did enough research on the pro's , con's of going either way. I know I will be growing some different algae's. I've wasted another good chunk of the day researching wavemakers and return pumps...lol
Nice! Any thoughts on what you're going to use now after your day if research? And as far as cons go for Mirical Mud, i havent found any myself. Nothing but pros! Haha I'm excited to use it, it seems better then the other refugium "mud" products, and i know it's better then sand lol.

I'm pretty set on the Syncra Silent Pump and may go with the 3.0 because I was using the http://www.reefcentral.com/index.php/head-loss-calculator

and the 3.0 is 714gph Total losses are 5.19 feet of head pressure, or 2.24 PSI. with a flow rate of 417 GPH used a mag7 for comparison. added the +14 to come out with 431.

the 2.0 used a mag 5 + added the 68 since mag 5 is only 500gph and came up with 371gph.

I'm guessing these are rough estimates. Now if you go with a 1" return it would give you less head loss and more gph.

Comparision : Mag5 with 1" return +68 =
Total losses are 3.49 feet of head pressure, or 1.51 PSI. with a flow rate of 406 GPH

Comparision : Mag 7 +14gph
Total losses are 3.97 feet of head pressure, or 1.72 PSI. with a flow rate of 495 GPH

So I think you called it right with the Syncra Silent 2.0 Pump as that would be in the 7-10X per hour flow through the sump. This is just however on just 40 gallons and not counting the sump volume of water in the total. If I'm thinking correctly. Everything I have been reading is Syncra usually underrates their flow. It seems it really comes down to the plumbing and how many elbows etc. I'm working up a drawing in paint..lol

Wow im not going to lie that was pretty intense. If you put in rock and sand displacement i bet its around 45g but that is also a rough estimate lol. I had considered the 3.0 but im kinda scared the overflow box might now be able to handle the flow but you can tune it back if you need to i guess. Im going to use silicone tubing on the return and no elbows it will be a straight shot.

for what's it worth dept. we got our pods =brisbe, orange, and one I cant pronounce from foster and smith ie liveaquaria, and they arrived up here in Mn in Feb. overnite with heat packs from florida will use them again setting up 3 more tanks as I speak.

Thanks for the recommendation! I was considering them as an option as well, them seem to have a lot of different species of pods. Diversity is never a bad thing!

That's what scared me though as I wouldn't have many 90's at all in the return as it would be a 3 ft almost straight shot except for a 45 up to the tank. I considered using SpaFlex PVC pipe which is flexible but thicker than normal tubing and fits right into PVC pipe fittings. I may go that route since it would be easy to do it as a return and no 45's and 1 90. The difference in price between the 3.0 and the 2.0 isn't really that much.. about 13.00...lol

I was reading that dialing back the return is harder on the pump. SpaFlex is very cheap also, I was reading about it on here in a thread.

Yeah i could see that being hard on the pump. A dc pump would be nice, like that new one from ecotech 😃(thats probably a little overkill for out 40 breeders lol). I just remembered i will have one 90 on my return going into the bulkhead into the tank. But its only about 3 feet i believe. Any conclusion on your wavemakers yet??? And have you considered a light for your refugium? Idk if i want a clip on light or a $40-$50 led light.

I actually considered the ecotech pump for a minute:eek1: No, on the wavemakers, been watching videos though. Refugium light, haven't gotten to that point and which one were you considering?

The finnex fuge ray, and the finnex ray2(they both come in a 12" version so it would be perfect for my sump), and the PAR38 Refugium LED Light from RapidLED. People say you can get the same spectrum from a home depot light (which is probably true) but I'd prefer something more low profile and with less power consumption. The par38 light isnt low profile but ive heard a lot of good things about this light.

I've been looking at lights for the refugium and here are a few.. still need to research.

Definitely need to research, not sure if some of those are too small, but then again I don't need something huge. I want to find something I can focus just on the refugium and not grow algae in the other spaces of my sump. Which is why I used black acrylic for my dividers in the sump. I really like the finnex fuge ray, need to measure my distance of my fuge.

A daylight balanced LED bulb from Home Depot, or another big box store, would be fine if you're just trying to grow Chaeto, IMO.

Yeah my fuge is on 7x12x7ish not really big, i kinda like that small finnex one you found. When i was looking them up? the finnex fuge ray and ray 2, i was kind thinking that this may be too much light spread. Im going to keep reaching also because this isnt a very big decision but its ones of the last i have to make(as far as equipment goes at least lol).

Im going to be doing a couple of different algaes, and i want something super low profile and money really isnt an issue. I have so much money in this already i really dont mind dumping more money into it as dumb as that sounds! 😄

That's pretty much what I am doing and how I feel :) I'll have a fairly sizeable refugium as I'm using a 20 long tank. Might be a 10x12 or 12x12. I was thinking of using it horizontal also vs vertical in my refugium. It really shouldn't have a ton of light spread.

Just measured mine its 9.5x12x7 (couldnt remember even tho I made it lol). Might be doing another on with shorter baffles, kinda scared about back siphon. But ill know when i do my leak test on plumbing and tank. If it cant handle the back siphon then im going to try to shorten my baffles a could of inches.

How much longer do you have before you get to setup?
