Biggest tank on Reef Central? MÃ¥st Beautiful?

Steve Weast was nice enough to open his house and host our annual summer BBQ for you club(PNWMAS), again. He has changed the tank around some what and I think it looks better than ever. As of today I haven't checked out his site to see if the updated pictures have been posted. But pictures do it NO justice.

Not only did Steve have you over to checkout his tank...but he fed you as well?!?!?!?!? Holy smokes you scored! Most of us will probably die before we ever get to peek at such a marvel. Keep us posted if the new pics do show up on his site...I can't wait!!!!!!

SeaWorld Orlando has a 1500g reef tank. Here are the specs:

"The tank is a 1500 gallon acrylic aquarium with 2 -1000W Sunmaster bulbs. It's supplemented with 8- 96W Actinic blue powercompact bulbs. We use Instant Ocean Reef Crystals for our salt. Calcium Reactors and Kalk for Ca and Alk."

A little over 20,000 gallons of reef

A little over 20,000 gallons of reef

I've had the pleasure of being a hobbyist and professional aquarist, but wasn't happy working for someone else so I cofounded Atlantis Marine World Aquarium where I designed and built this 20,000 gallon reef tank, so even though its this big and at a public aquarium, its still my own reef tank :)

OMG!!! those tanks (especially the 4000) are FREAKING REDICULOUS. I think is would be awesome to have some of those Freaking sharks have Freaking laser beams attached to their heads. or maybe just some angry sea bass, i don't know.

very impressive, would you happen to have some construction pictures ? also the equipment would be very intresting to see, is it possible to get more info about the equipment ?
what are the dimension of the display ?
are you running a fuge ? ozone ? UV ? surge ? how high of turnover rate ? humidity issues ? lights ?
sorry for all the questions, i hope you find the time to answer them :)

Some more photos at:

I don't have any construction photos on line, 1 gram/hour ozone into a 200gpm FF, 300 gallon CSD, (12) 1000w Sunmaster bulbs, (8) 1000w Venture Blue BDX, (6) 400w XM 10K, (1) 400w XM20K, the room is vented 24/7, no UV, turnover varies-not sure where I'm at right now, I have some prop prototypes that I'm playing with now that can move 500gpm, the tank is 30' long x 14' wide x 6.5' deep.
I have some macro algae in some attached tanks, but wouldn't consider them a true fuge, Rowaphos and Phosban used, carbon as well.
If you have reef club in your area, I could come speak at your club as I'm part of the Marineland Speakers Program, or if you're in the area, we can make some time for a quick behind the scenes view.
The tank is my baby and mistress all in one...

Here's a picture I took some time back at a test aquarium that the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. The place moved to this location until 2008 while the old place gets earthquake retrofit (ie rebuilt), and the story that I heard is they have this tank to get a feel for what sort of lighting is needed for large tanks, not any of these pansyassed 36" tall tanks either.. this bad boy is 2 stories tall, but "only" 20000 gallons.

Not exactly a show tank either as mentioned its a test tank, but they have quite a lot of nice fish in it. They did have a few clams at the very bottom large ones too! Think some may have died though as the last time I was there (3-4 months ago) I saw empty shells. All the corals are softies though, although there are some anemone at various levels for the clownfish, and very little live rock, they used grates to hold everything up primarily (which you can see in this pic which is about 2 months after it was setup). Oh and to give you a sense of scale (which you can get with the people's heads) that leather about the midlevel would fit as a comforter on a kingsized bed :)

Here's what they use for lighting too

those are 2000 watt metal halides, this was the morning so only 6 of 10 were on, unsure if they turn on all of them later though.

joe,
thank you very much for answering my questions:)
btw, i am in Canada, is not likely that i will be in NY anytime soon, but thanx for the offer,

Klaus Jansen's tank is a mystery. I find it incredible that he doesn't use pictures of it on his own website! Looks like a pretty good example of his workmanship to me. [/B]

Hi Klaus,
Any chance of posting some pics of your tank:D

Been wanting to see more photos evr since I saw that pic of of you feeding your fish in MCRA.
What a sensational looking tank you got.
Pics would be most appreciated, and would probably get linked to from other boards from around the world.

If not, the dimensions at least??

Heres hoping

Sorry Klaus,
I just re read your post, and I'm glad you will be posting pics.

I don't think that posting pictures of tanks you've built or are building is a commercial plug at all.
It is more eye candy. I think the admin guys will understand that you are posting pictures of large tanks for curiosity only, rather than trying to generate business.

So lets see those pictures then please.:D
