Birds

It works, apparently. This little guy was sitting on it during lunch when I came home.

His beak sure does look overgrown.

Dude...that is the scragliest (is that a word?) bird I've ever seen! Good thing you're feeding him, he looks like he needs some help!

Yeah, he is very scraggly. I actually havent seen him around for about a week now but I'm seeing lots of them with normal beaks.

zx - what kind of bird is that? What was your focal length? Nice exposure, great sharpness.

Overgrowth of the upper beak is the most common form of overgrowth. Usually in wild birds it is due to an injury of some type.

Here's a few more of mine:

Earlier in the year I followed this guy around. It flew down behind a fallen tree and came up with breakfast:

After it finished, it struck a pose in the morning sun:

I followed it around for a couple of hours and it let me get REALLY close (95% of frame):

All were with the D3 and the 300 2.8. On the first two, I also used the 2.0 TC. The last shot I was taken hand held and I even had to back up since I was closer than minimum focusing distance of the 300 2.8.

Oh, and here is an obligatory eagle shot:
