Blood Red Fire Shrimp

I read were this type of shrimp will become depressed if not kept with a mate.... but they are also not tolerant of their own kind...

ok.... so how do I get a mated pair? Just keep going thru them until two seem to be happy and not trying to kill one another?

thanks

i have one and it is very happy. always hangs out with my clown and eats out of my hand. read about them at liveaquaria.com

they have great animal descriptions

i had a fire shrimp and a skunk together in my nano and they didnt really get along at all. the fire shrimp was the aggressive one and would chase the skunk if it got in it's way. never saw any hard-core fighting, but they definitely didnt get along. they mostly stayed in their seperate corners of the tank. i think the only thing that saved the skunk was he was a better/quicker swimmer than the fire shrimp.

I never had trouble when I had two Fire shrimp and two peppermints together in a 75. The only shrimp I ever had trouble with was Coral Banded, which hated everything!

Fire shrimp come from deeper waters than other ornamental shrimp available in the trade. Their red color at depths makes them look black. They are cryptic snimals, and in my personal experience seem to be more social and viewable if kept in pairs. Shrimp have the magical ability to change sex based on need called sequential hermaphrodites, therefore, if you get two shrimp you will eventually have a male and female pair.

The only issue that i have ever seen with the fire shrimp is in bagging/shipping them together. They tend to cannibalize one another in shipping/bagging, so they do best when bagged individually. As long as you get them bagged separately, they will generally inhaibit a tank peacefully, with other species of shrimp. At any given time at the shop we have from 2-6 fire shrimp hanging out in the same 33gallon aquarium with no issues!

These guys generally do well with other shrimp with the exception of the coral banded. I have seen large agressive coral banded shrimp kill new shrimp additions out of sheer joy, not even attempting to eat the body of the deceased individual. IMO coral banded shrimp should be kept alone, but Fire, peppermint, and cleaner, can all be kept together peacefully in an adequately sized aquarium!

hope this was of some help!

cheers~!

How big is your tank?

I have one Fire and two Skunk in 180g. They don't bother each other and in the tanks I've seen they are pretty compatable. The fire shrimp likes to hide during the day, probably to escape some bright lights.

It's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a shrimp mixed... bred for its skills in magic.

Jon-- Aren't the skunks simultaneous sequential hermaphrodites? That is, aren't they always male and female, but take turns on which one is going to hold the eggs?

I'm telling you, if you started out a Sex Ed course with marine sexuality by the time you got to human sexuality everyone would be bored to tears. Marine sexuality is so crazy!
