Blue Carpet Anemone - FINALLY!

I cant take a picture to save my life. It is more purple than what the pictures show, and fully opened it is easily 12".

I realize I picked the harder to keep of the carpets, but I could not pass on the chance to have one, and one that looked so healthy. Also, I had them feed the blue and the purple, and I thought the puple had a better feeding response. In the end it was just a flip of the coin.

Did you go to the frag swap? I made out pretty good. I won both $25 dollar phishy business gift certificates, and a reefgeek t5 retro kit. The reason I purchased the carpet was because of the 25% off and the $50 bucks I won. I had seen all the carpets they had about three weeks ago, so it was on my mind.

Wow! That is soooo beautiful! Good Job!

Yes... I went to the fragswap and I've never felt so happy to be $700 down... lol. The best frags I got were the Tyree Purple Monster and the $500 Efflo.

I did win 1 of the raffles... the free $25 frag from Cherry Corals. I was sooo hoping to win the geo reactor though.

The anemone is still doing well. I do have a question though... it seems some people are calling it a haddoni... and some a gigantic. What is the best way to identify it? I bought it thinking it was a haddoni.

That looks stunning!!! Yeah keep us posted on how it's doing. Get some cool clowns so we can get more jealous. Really sweet! Good luck!

Thanks! ... I'm actually looking to buy some clowns really soon. My gf and I are really into the picasso's or snowcasso's... now I just need to find a pair that I could afford :) ... Phishy Business has some really beautiful ones... I can't remember what they called them but I know they are not picasso's... but at the price they are selling them... $300 each... I can't. If anyone has any contacts... pls lmk.

my guess is gigantea but the verrucae should be a dead give away on that anemone. Check the underside of the orals disc, for the little dots/bumps/warts... If they are purple, its definitely a gigantea

I was thinking yours was the haddoni, and the one I posted picks off was the gigantea. The underside of mine does have the purple dots.

Which one did you buy jdrabek............the one in the front in the sand tub looked the healthiest to me.

I've seen a lot of Giganteas come in lately locally & they have looked very healthy.

Hmmm... I don't think it's a Gig ... the bumps don't look purple... well kind of but I think it is due to the lighting... very faint. I was really worried this morning... he had wedged himself in a crack and only about 2" of him was showing. He is not fully open yet... but a whole lot better now.

Anyways... I ordered 2 picasso's from Doni yesterday... and they came in today. I am so excited because they hosted the carpet anemone about 5 minutes after the were released. It was almost like they knew it was there the whole time.

I acclimated the picasso's for about 4 hours... then put them in the tank in a breeder's net so they get used to the flow. They are really small so I had to screen in the overflow so they don't get sucked in by accident.

After about 5 hours of being in the tank... I let them free. They started swiming around then went to the side of the tank where the anemone was and dove right it. I caught it all on video!

Anyways... here are the pics. I really need to get a good camera... to get some better pics.. sorry.

Its looks like a gigantea moreso now. I would almost put money on it.
Watch the clowns i had to pull mine because they were pestering the nem too much. Just untill the nem eats aggressively.
Those look pretty small they might not cause much stress for the nem.

It was the one in the sand tub. So far so good, but still keeping my fingers crossed. Getting ready to switch everything over to the 90, so part of me wishes I would have waited, but I jumped at the chance with one that looked so healthy.

Hi Jdrabek

Just wondering if you don't mind letting me know how the anemone is going, what your feeding it any differences since having it etc

The anemones does not look as goo in the last set of pictures. I hope he is doing well for you. They are every hard to keep. Updates?

The purple one is definitely a gigantea.

I agree with the other posters that the blue one is probably a gigantea, but hard to tell definitively without seeing the column. The tentacles sure look like it, however.

Both look amazingly healthy, and your clowns sure love them!

So I went into my LFS (PhishyBusiness) today and I saw something that I have always wanted for many years. A Blue Carpet Anemone... It was the first one I saw in real life so I had to get it! At first I said no because I heard they were so hard to keep... but my Girlfriend said she'd buy it for me... so how could I refuse!

It was also my lucky day since they were having a 25% off fish and coral... so we got him really cheap. I really hope I can care for him properly and he survives... I've had carpet anemones before... just never found a blue one and I've heard how hard they could be.

Wish me luck! Now to find the perfect clowns to go with it!

Here he is! - Sorry about the pic... I just used a simple point and click camera. He's under Dual 250w 12000k MH and 192w PC (420 & 460 Actinic) Supplement.

Hi Jdrabek

So far so good. At present I only feed mysis directly, but I am sure it is getting what ever else I feed the tank. I was feeding everyday a little bit the first two weeks, but know I feed about once a week. It started to move up from the sand/rock interface for a couple of days, not far, but I was thinking that my T5's were not enough. It has since moved back down where it was though. I have had a day or two where I thought it looked really bad, but the next day it looks even bigger and better than before. The clowns can not get enough of it though and have enjoyed watching them interact with it, such as when they suck on the tentacle or when they rip off one and eat it.

The color is still as purple as ever and when fully expanded it takes up a lot of space in the 55 its in. I cant wait to get it into the 90. I did have to move some corals around because it was stretching its foot and spreading out over the rocks above and around it and getting real close to the corals. I perform weekly water changes of about 15 gallons and have some decent flow in the tank. The flow is not direct, but its tentacles move around a lot and it seems to like that. The flow seems to hit it randomly, where the tentacles are moving around a lot and then there will be a several seconds where they stop.

I will post some pics later.

Hi MentalDragon
Can I ask the same question as i asked jdrabek about your blue

"I acclimated the picasso's for about 4 hours..."

That is way too long to acclimate a clown. They shouldn't be acclimated for more than an hour. Its really not necessary to do it longer and just stresses the fish more. Clowns really don't need even that long.

BTW that's a Gig for sure. Nice too.

i have a blue carpet just like the one on this post...

I love it looks great but i just added some new fish today and a foxface tang 5 seconds into the tank ran right into the anenome....

instant dinner...eeeks......

arent fish suppose to realize stay away????
