Blue Gig / possible acquisition

There is someone local to me that is breaking down his tank and he has a very nice blue gig i would say about 18". He has been in his tank for 7 years and looks healthy. I would like to get it but not sure if my current tank would cut it given i have 3 haddoni's in there. He's attached to a rock of course up high and would purchase the rock he's on as well.

I'm upgrading my current tank to a 72" X 36" X 24" custom tank. This will give my 3 haddoni's plenty of room. But i am in the very early stages of this and probably wont have my new tank up and running for another 6 months. Do you think my current 125g tank would be able to handle the blue Gig? I'm running 2 CREE LED fixtures that are 36X3W so would want to know if that lighting would be enough for him. Second i would probably put the rock with him on it on the top so he gets the most light. What do you guys think?

tank-wise, my own experience is a yes, you can do it. light-wise, i dont know anything about LEDs so i cant comment.

Yes, my gig and Haddoni touch all day long and are very large, happy and healthy. They are fine in a tank together. I also have three RBTA's on the other side of the tank. All are happy and healthy.

Any more thoughts on my lighting? These are LED's i purchased from eshine. They are chinese CREE led's.

You should be just fine.. One of my gigs is 30" from my Radions, the other is 9" or so from my Radions... Put it as high as possible and it will find a nice spot.

Ok, really thinking of pulling the trigger on this one, What would be the best way to transport it? I live about 15 mins away in no traffic. It will be coming along with the rock it is attached to. Should i just put him in a 5 gallon bucket?

if it will fit in the 5 gal bucket withiut hurting themen or you could pick up a cheap steralite cotaner from a local walmart that would work also

Sounds like it might be too big for a standard bucket, I'd consider picking up a rubbermaid tote or one of those cheaper 20g utility tubs with rope handles. I have found them handy to have around, very useful for transporting larger livestock. Something like this:

Thanks guys, will water temp be a factor during trip? Also what would best method be for acclimation?

if the thing is on a rock, i dont recommend you bring a "too large" bucket, in transit the rock will tumble and rock back and forth and even roll around the bucket, ask the seller how big is the rock and get a bucket barely bigger than the rock and put it in there, that way no rolling around inside on the ride home.

for acclimation i would first drop the bucket inside your sump to let the temp equalize and while it does that you drip the DT water into the bucket, increase the drip-rate gradually........... do some research on here there are plenty of info already written :)

Thats pretty much what I did with my haddoni's....i just dripped them for about 20 mins...salinity was the same to begin with...one of them i put straight in there and it didnt mind at all.

Take plenty of pictures, if you would, before/during.

Thanks!

I can not wait to see this one.

Unless you can prevent the rock from moving during transport, I recommend removing it from the rock, The best way to do this is to chisel the rock. Remove the nem and rock from the tank, then quickly chisel away, being careful not to harm the nem. Then you can place the nem in a 5 gallon bucket, or you can buy a cheap styrofoam cooler. Ive done this twice with favorable results.

He's in the tank!

He's in the tank!

Ok i got the Gig. My worst fears where realized when i got there and saw where he was, attached to this HUGE rock, i mean the thing was enormous...no way it would fit in my tank...the seller has a 450g tank so in there it doesn't look so big.

So we took the entire rock out and put in a huge tote that i brought with me and submerged it in water. Then the seller chiseled the rock so it was just big enough to fit in a 5 gallon bucket with no issue...here he is in the bucket

Here he is now after some acclimation in my tank, pics taken 2-3 minutes after i put him in there

How does he look??

WOW... Unbelievable....

I think he is in the wrong tank!

Can you pick him back up and bring him to Maryland?

That is exactly what I am looking for.

ok.. Jealous now.

I feel privilidged to have found a healthy gig only minutes away from home. He's looking real good tonight and I hope he likes his spot. I can imagine he must be a bit upset being in the same place for 7 years and now going through a move. He will probably miss his clown fish.
