breeding clown fish

I have a mated piar of Percula's. I understand if I put a clay pot in the system, They will mate. I also understand when the eggs are layed and fertilized, they need to be in the dark. I also believe the perculas should be taken out of the tank when the eggs mature to fry. The hardest time is the first 6 weeks. How am I doing so far?

Hi John,
You are pretty close. Get Joyce Wilkerson's book Clownfishes and get answers to most all of your questions.

They need more than a clay pot to mate. It is not a mating que, but a convenient (for the aquarist) place to lay eggs. Joyce will fill you in.

Eggs are LAID in the daytime usually, and only hatch after dark. Perhaps that's what you were remembering.

Eggs mature and hatch to larvae. Either eggs can be removed from the tank before hatching, or larvae can be removed immediately after hatch. The parents will eat the larvae if left alone with them. The larvae need a tank devoid of predators to survive. Joyce will fill you in on the details.

No sure what you mean by hardest time. Losses can occur at any time, but usually most losses occur in the first 2 weeks.

We are often asked if it is easy to breed clownfish. I find that a difficult question. Everything is easy once you know what you are doing. If the question is: is it simple to raise clownfish?, then the answer is, IMHO, no.

Get Joyce's book, and enjoy reading it. You will find a lot of good information there, and can refer back to it when you need to.

Good luck, and check back with us when you get started.

Thanks,

I think a friend of mine is actually giving me that book tomorrow. I know what you mean by defining hard. I feel if I can keep them alive for the first 2-3 weeks than I can raise them and introduce them to other tanks. I have no intenton of selling them. I want to put them in my various systems in my classroom. I got motivated because my anemone split this weekend with no notice and I thaught (purple bubble tip) let's see what I can do. My leather toad stool is also in the process of doing something.. What, I do not know. I noticed a small polyp next to it on the live rock a few weeks ago but now it has to anchor points. I am asssuming it is going to split. However my knowledge of soft corals is limited at that level. Thanks again for your help

One caveat.. Perculas have a rather long growout compared to Ocellaris.. 9 months or more compared to 4-6 months for ocellaris..

Raising the fry is the same, but speed of growth is much slower for the Perculas..

just my .o2
