Breeding Epaulette Sharks

I just adopted a 24" female (Australian epaulette shark)from a friend. She is in a 100 gallon QT tank. I plan to move her to a 300 gallon stock tank when I move into my new home which will be in a couple months.

I entertained the idea of breeding epaulettes. Of course I need a male but I was wondering if anyone has had success breeding these sharks. If you have information on breeding epaulettes, let me know.

Thanks

I'm not sure of his success, but Morgan @ Inland Aquatics has males and females together in a 300+ shallow shark tank with the intent on breeding. I'd reach out to him.

Epaulettes are great aquarium sharks and fun to work with. We keep some pairs at SA and raise the pups. The most important thing I find is just to keep the parents happy (clean water, lots of nutritious food, and some sheltered hiding spots). The egg pouches will just appear in the tanks and can be collected-out to separate for incubation. It generally takes 3-4 months for the shark pup to hatch. Getting them to eat early-on is important, but offering lots of "smelly" foods (lancefish, squid, mysis shrimp, etc) seems to get them feeding. Once they are a few weeks post-hatch and feeding well, the pups are pretty tough. There are several people that have bred them and had success, so it's definitely possible!

Your female probably has some more growing to do. I have three species of eppies that are dropping eggs. I can tell you that my common epaulette (H. ocellatum) didn't mature until about 30 inches. If you have the PNG species (H. hallstromi) it was closer to 26 inches.

Anyway, they are the easiest shark available. Large males are hard to find. I searched for over 3 years before I found a mature male, so don't pass on one.

I'm now attempting to breed Short tail nurse sharks. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2390762

Yeah, I've been looking for a sexually mature male for over two years to go with my female. She's started dropping egg cases back when I started looking.

I'd say a 300 gallon is going to be too small to be breeding them in. I have mine in a 3,000 (with other sharks and fish).

Nice eppie. That is an interesting pattern. It has a small and poorly marginated ocellus and many collisions of the smaller spots. Nice and fat, what you would expect from a mature female.

For some reason the males are not as hardy and even when checking craig's list and other classifieds - I only find large females

Don't know why it round the 2000 to 200, likely a typo. However, you will need to remove the reference to the business your starting from your sig. Can't do any sort of self promotion without violating the [ua] ;)
