Brian's 270 Starphire

How are you taking the first two pictures of the mini-colonies. They look like top down shots, so i was wondering if you had an enclosure or some kind of look down box.

Alex, both shot are top down. They are both taken without a box or enclosure. There is a edge on the back side of my tank where I can stand on and look down though the top of my canopy. My reflectors are on rollers, so I can move them if I need to.

I just looked back through all of your stand build pictures and couldn't see the back side edge you were talking about. Could you post some pictures of that and maybe even the top of the canopy? I did not know that your canopy was completely open on the top. I know you like wrasses, and I assume the top is well over 12" from the water line, but is there ever any fear that a wrasse will make an epic leap completely over the canopy sides and onto the floor?

Actually, if you wouldn't mind could you take a few wider angle pictures of the entire room? My tank build will have to go together extremely fast once I am down in North Carolina and I was hoping to steal a bunch of your ideas. I am now considering a movable light rack and laminate because of this thread, plus I want to build my own stand like you did.

Here you go Alex.

This is the edge I was talking about. It's not build it to the stand but it is build into the basement wall :p. The tank sits a foot from the wall so I can access the back if needed.

This is the same edge, just on the other side of the tank, coming down the stairs to the basement.

Here is a pic inside the canopy. The canopy is 17" tall and is open. With 3 LAII, no fish is jumping out the top. I do have egg create that is one the back of the canopy and over the overflow.

... and a few pic of the living room in the basement where the tank is. Sorry for the mess ;).

Dave, it's not a problem fish at all, just won't touch any of the BA. I got it when it was about 4" and it's now probably 5"+ in only a few months. It eats all the food that I feed the tank, including the nori, but I have never seen it even take a nibble of the abundant BA. Maybe it gave up when it saw how much there was :lmao:

Yeah, that's how my Blonde Naso was too. He started out eating the BA but soon gave it up when he new he had easier meals to have, lol!~

Does he touch any hair algae at all, or do you not have the blessing???

Good luck Dave LMK how the rabbit works out. I do agree with on the Emeralds, but right now they seem to be doing the job and will stay until the bubble algae is gone.

Glad you're not having any saboteur emerald crabs Brian... just keep your eyes on the little varmints!~

I'll let you know how the rabbit fish does, I should be picking him up in a couple weeks roughly.... That is if he hasn't sold by then? I've got a word in with the powers that be but know they cant' hold any longer than a week usually. Of course they take good care of me there after being a 12+ year customer!~ ;)

Is this any better .

Nice pic Brian, I like your man cave too!~ Wish I had one of those... some day maybe???

Also, I was curious if you have the 6205 intake screens on your middle two 6105's? I've got them on both of my 6105's and they really broaden the flow pattern nicely!~

Really like all the pieces your picking up. I know who I'm gonna be calling on for frags when the fill out, lol!~ :wavehand:

Thanks Dave, the man cave stops at the tank and the deer. I have a few others that I would like to hang on the wall, but I know better :fun2:.

The two middle powerheads are actually hydro's. I plan on adding two wireless vortec or 2 6205 this fall if funding allows.

Kenny, that a tank grown colony that he gave me. He had two colonies of it, that he's had for years.

That one came from an LFS call Coral Reef, back in the early 90's/ late 80's. The store was own by Mike King, who now works in America Samoa rebuilding reefs. He is the fonder of COARL ;).

That's cool to be able to get tank raised colonies that big. I wished I could get my hands on some of those.

Ah, well you threw me off with this in you signature line: (4)Tunze 6105 streams

I think that's false advertising friend, lol!~ :hammer: (j/k...)
