Brightwell Aquatics NeoZeo method.

An update on my neozeo results. :)

I seemed to have had a peak of PO4 in the swap to neozeo over from prodibio. The Prodibio dosing was keeping my PO4 at .01 ppm with my reef. A few weeks into neozeo I started to get some nasty bryopsis patches. This patch of bryopsis was the first in almost a year. I think my PO4 and NO3 were peaking a bit with the Prodibio to NeoZeo swap. PO4 rose to .03 ppm. This is the not so pretty result (from about a month ago after weening off Prodibio).

I have a Merck/Rowa low range P04 test and a Martini photometer to keep track of PO4 so I decided to up the MB7 and RBF dose and add more neozeo media to my canister (to try to drive PO4 down). I was still ramping up to the full measure of zeo stones according to the brightwell manual but realized maybe that was not the way to go because I had been using prodibio before and already had established a fairly low nutrient state in my tank.

After adding more zeo stones the last few weeks and going to a full dose of the bacs and carbon I started to see my phosphate drop down to .01. The algae started fading.

The algae turns to a light green and then finally a grey or white.

Last PO4 test with the Merck kit showed .008. Most of the bryopsis patch has turned to a gray color with just a husk and is melting away. So I am pleased with the reduction in algae.

In the last pic you can also see a sprig of leftover macro algae (dictyota?) that is also turning gray/brown and dying off (after many months of fighting it off).

It has been almost six weeks since dosing any prodibio products and I think the basic parts of this brightwell system perform fairly well in terms reducting nutrients. It is like Zeovit and Ultralith and even other probiotic methods and requires some real hands on tweaking to get things rolling.

The initial algae blooms or biofilm blooms reported by others (and that I have experienced as shown above) seem to be an adjustment phase for these type systems. For me the blooms have responded to the weekly water change and basic reef maintenance outlined and recommended in this and the other probiotic system manuals. I have had good results with slightly boosting the bac/carbon dosing and skim, skim, skim and when that's done skim some more - dump the collection cup and repeat...

Sam got a question are you running your skimmer after you dose you MB7 or do you turn it off for the four hours like the directions say?

I'm not sure what Sammy did, but in the first two weeks I would turn off the skimmer for four hours each night when I dosed, and it seemed to make quite a difference in terms of skimmate.

I other words, the first two hours after it was turned back on it would pull a lot of gunk.

Now that I am dosing MB7 just once a week, and the biofuel every other day, I just leave the skimmer running. In all honesty, it seems like my skimmer pulls more since starting the system, and the sludge is quite a bit thicker...

I am turning my skimmer off after dosing the MB7. I have even left it off the whole night but when I do this I just take the cup of the skimmer and leave it running to keep O2 levels up.

the brown film is a typical indication of overdose in any probiotic system, and not enough algae eating snails and tangs.

I have been running the neozeo for three months in the sps tank at our store without the zeoliths and the results are bordering on amazing. hair algae gone, high survival rates of corals, and increased coloration and lack of colors lost on corals that come in neon. amazing water clarity and much less glass cleaning. once you have your phos and trates under control you can cut back on the bacter and fuel dosage quite a lot and the bacterial growths will slow down.

i have a purple tang, and lawnmower blenny in the 100 gallon tank and they literally fight over new corals to eat the algae off upon introduction from the wholesaler. this little duo has done quite the job on any excess algae. I don't really keep many snails or crabs in this tank so I can dose iterceptor as needed. this product is very good in my experience.

So I see where you had some bryopsios show up sammy but nobody has had the "brown slime"???

Dennis
You said Chris replied back? Please post his exact response.
:)

I am meeting him one week from yesterday, and can ask further questions.

I deleted the email. Sorry. He gave a couple paragraph response saying basically that the "brown slime" was a normal progression in the processing of the nutrient load in the tank. That it was mentioned in the instruction document that seeing this brown "biofilm" was normal and would dissipate the longer you used the system.

Dennis

I'd have to agree that does seem to be the progression, and what I went through. Reading back through this thread, I think several of us have.

where is everyone getting the info to start this process? just wondering u use some brightwell products and would like more info on this. thanks

I uploaded the file here for my club.

Takes a second to load, and then it shows up at the bottom right tab.

Are you guys turning your skimmers off for the mircobactor7, and the biofuel, or are you just doing it for microbactor. Also are you adding these at the same time or are you doing one in the morning and one at night.

It;s best to add them after your lights are off. I'm adding mine to the main display and leaving the skimmer running.

Ok just checking and i dont know if anyone asked Chris or not, but what is the purpose of turning the skimmer off, i thought you would leave the skimmer on to work hard to pull out the dark slugy stuff. The bottles say to turn them off, well the MB7 says to but the biofuel says you dont have to.

if you have any questions for chris you can just email brightwell. i did the other day and chris got right back to me.

you can actually call too if you want to hear a real voice. pretty interesting that he actually picks up the phone!

Anything specifically you wanting to know H2O? I'm really wanting to know a good recipe and or schedule to use the products I am using, and if I should add or remove anything that I am currently using.

Other than that I am wanting to know about this brown/dark green stuff that seems to grow pretty crazy.

I've ruled out too heavy of dosing, as I cut that back almost by half.

So far I am still very happy with my results. I'll be a little happier when I get my Gro-Tech dosing pump though. Doing all of this by hand is a PITA.
