No cult of personality . Just lot's of reliable advice over the years not to mention credentials and lack of a profit motive which obviously to drives some of the obfuscatory nonsense discussed as science in commercial product descriptions.But then I don't claim to have $15 a pound live rock nor do I decorate my aquarium with pretty bottles of elixers.

right on tom randy is always a big help i go by everything he says except lol phosoguard lol i have great luck with it never no algae but i do admire his opinion yeah we should go into the rock business seems there gold in dem dar rocks he has

I haven't been a member of RC for very long, but I have read through many of Randy's posts. It is obvious that he is not a "wannabe" chemist. Anyone who as read any of his posts could figure this out. My barometer isI don't understand half of the words that he uses but I get the point he is making.:lolspin: I've known a few scientists in a few fields and I must say Randy, for a scientist, your grammar is impeccable.lol...I appreciate the fact that you are willing to help so many with no itent of making any profit. I do have a question for you though. I am not comfortable with DIY supplements yet, so is there a commercially available kalkwasser you wul reccomend? I would like to educate myself more on DIY supps. but that will come in time. Until then I need to buy the storebought stuff. thanks

Mrs Wages pickling lime is not really a diy. You just mix it and go. But if you are looking for a commercial kalkwasser, I have found Seachems to be quite pure. When I was using it, I hardly got any left over solids in the bottom of the mixing container.

Pretty good stuff from my experience. :)

Never tried the Sea Chem calcium hydroxide but I'll take Billy's word on it.The Bulk Reef Supply calcium hydroxide is a nice product as well.

Thanks, jdyer. :)

I agree with Jonathan and Tom that the calcium hydroxide (lime; kalkwasser) that you get from a place like Bulk Reef Supply or Mrs. Wages is the same material that you buy from a hobby company, rather than a DIY that you need to mix or do something special on your own (like a two part or an iron supplement, etc). If you do go the commercial route, ESV (B-ionic) is also a very good brand to choose for many things, including limewater. :)

Thanks guys. I will read on all of those suggestions, and make a decision. This is my first endeavor into dosing limewater so I am excited to see the results!

Brightwell relation to Kent

Brightwell relation to Kent

I just though I'd throw this out there, since this thread started out about Brightwell, his products and some info about Kent as well.

Chris Brightwell is actually Jack Kent's son-in-law

Brightwell was supposedly funded, haven't been able to confirm, by Jack Kent.

That I did not know Acor so thanks :D And now that makes much more sense, as to how Brightwell, out of nowhere, popped into this hobby with ads and goods as if they have been around for years, as Jack Kent sold out Kent before Brightwell came to be.

Brightwell = Kent

Brightwell = Kent

You're most welcome!

Basically Brightwell is just Kent repackaged! Same low quality, new package, lol!

OH, I new that, he use work for Jack :) All he has done is add more low quality "stuff". And he needs lessons in real chemistry :lol: That book Chris wrote on Marine Chemistry is terrible. And when I see that bucket of his salt and the assay data sheets on it I always fall out of my chair and bump my head.

Didn't know Kent was connected to Chris Brightwell other than he used to work for the company and decided to branch out on his own. Would make sense though.

wow ,just read this whole tread in two and a half hours ! i have some rethinking to do on all that BW stuff in my basement above my sump .i have always believed in the KISS method and in the past two years started making things "complicated" with all these additives .i have spent quite a bit of money but have seen no improvement in my coral growth which has had me perplexed .maybe this tread just answered most if not all my questions .
thanks to everyone involved and Randy you have quite an impressive resume too !

My two cents:
I have for years made up alot of my own stuff! Buffer, calcium etc. I switched over to their salt and I really like it!
I then decided to try their "Reef snow" and my corals seem to really be responding well to it!
This is probably about the extent of what I will use from them, but so far I have to say I am impressed........

Awesome thread!

Randy's saved me quite a bit of cash since I switched to his two part recipe. Now I get everything I need from the grocery store and BRS.

I'm happy with the results.

hi, just read all this and was wondering what everyones views are on microbelift and specifically Special Blend

thanks to all as this has been a really informative thread, expecially since things here are super expensive

I've tried Special blend and other bacterial supplements for cycling tanks . Seems to speed things up. I think it may be useful particularly in starting tanks without live rock or live sand
