I'm going on vacation in Florida and was wondering how hard it would be to bring back rics.

First a couple of questions,

- Do you think there is a better varietey in florida?

- Are they cheaper

- Will it survive the trip? Driving from MA (about 1 1/2 days)

Also any recomendations on how to go about taking them home would be nice. People move and there corals come with them correct? So I dont see why Its not possible.

Anyone from the Orlando area that wants to suggest a fish store to visit is welcome to share aswell.

Tony

I went to 7 seas in Almonte Springs just north of Orlando, I had them ship about $350 of corals. I told them when I was leaving and called them when I got home and a day later everything I bought was in the box. They are real nice people, at least when I was there. This was 3 years ago so I don't know for sure if they are still in business. They had the most corals and fish out of all the places I went to, they also had the cleanest tanks and most ricordea I had ever seen, They had a whole tank full of them most had multiple polyps on each rock.

I just brought back rics from Texas and they survived the same period in a sealed bag.

Check out Sea In The City......it's small but packed with goodies!!!!

Think of how the corals are shipped to the stores.....they may spend days in a bag, but the box may have heat/cold packs and styrofoam to control temp a bit.....should be fine...

You could put them in a cooler and hook up a battery powered air pump with air stone. I think Walmart has them for pretty cheap in the sporting goods section for fishing.....

I didnt think it would be this easy ... I was getting a tad bit elaborate.

So heatpack/coldpack with a batterypowered airpum and an airstone in a coller should be fine?

You could do it that way also.....If you have the room, this would save you shipping cost. I flew so there was no way for me toget the stuff on the plane....In my case it was much better to have it shipped.

yeah i live in orlando and have also begun going to sea in the city. I know they sold me florida ricoridias for 15 dollars a piece and gave me a free frag of kenya tree.

Do you think there is a better selection of ricordia in central orlando then I might find online?

There are literally NO rics in my area ... atleast not that I know of but I;m not so sure its worth the trouble if I could just get the same color morphs offline and ship em to my house after my tank has cycled.

Something for you guys to remember is that before your new purchase from the LFS made that quick little drive home with you, it was most likely on a 10-30+ hour flight/shipment in extreme conditions.

If you can maintain temperature within reason, you will be fine.

That is true but not in this case. He is coming to Florida & bringing back Florida Ricordia they are collected locally, no plane ride...only a boat ride. :D They will be under a heck of a lot less stress on the drive back than if he were to say give it to FedEx or UPS to kick around for 24hrs. (JMO)

Why more stress, Donavon? You're saying that a shorter boat ride will be more stressful than being shipped from across the world on a plane followed by a plane ride across the country? (Including the initial boat ride that it took to get to the car that took it to the place)

[yoda] confusing this is [/yoda]

(LOL) No i'm say he's going to Florida to get Florida Ricordia. The Florida Ricordia in the LFS are collected from Florida waters there for there is no long plane ride or trip in transite. After all they are FLORIDA ricordia there collected around Florida that was my point. When he gets them they should not be stressed.

do any of you know what the rules are regarding the (for the casual aquarist) collection of rics from FL waters?

how about bringing them back on a flight to another state?

It is illegal ... Rics. are one of a few things that are VERY protected. You have to have a license to collect them and even then you are limited on how many you can collect.
