I'm getting a Litermeter from Brian and I'm disgusted with BRS.
 
Appreciated Gary, but its already shipped out. I'll roll the dice. Situationally (broke as a joke after a kitchen remodel) its my best/only option. If I'm ever flush again, I'll be seeking alternatives. Keep it for now, I'll pry it from you for some fags on my next visit to your house his jan or feb seeing as your passport doesn't allow you east of Weedsport.
 
If my third one dies, I won't bother trying to get another replacement.
Not worth the hassle.

I will say, I am astounded at what little technology $99 gets you. It's an extremely rudimentary design and construct.
 
I worked in customer service for 13 years. I have a pretty high standard when it comes to the treatment of customers. I think the only way to be successful is if you use the old adage, the customer is always right (except when they are trying to rip you off :D). Anyway, I was pleased with their responses, response time, and resolution. They could just as easily told me to pound salt (or pound Reef Crystals). I would have had to just eat it as I did PURCHASE the pump 2 years ago, even though it went from their shelf to mine.

They definitely need to change their "recommendations" for use, online. In light of recent discussion about iPhones out of box failure, I wonder what their percentage is in these pumps. It is a pretty chincy piece of equipment for the $. I have 2 more, the 1.1ml/min models. Not comforting at this point. This is the part I hope they read!
 
Just want to post about my experience with the top off doser now too..

It's been about 9 months since I got our doser and it decided to kick the bucket last night. Motor runs, but the gears seem to be stripped. Didn't take it apart since it's under warranty, but from looking at it that's our guess.

BRS has offered to replace it - I asked to see if advanced replacement is an option. I'm not looking forward to coming up with a method to plug or tie up the tubes, especially right now. At 30 weeks pregnant, the last thing I want to do is crawl around by the fish tank, especially twice, as this thing is mounted. I'm already too fat to reach past certain things..

Definitely want to look into another option after I get this thing replaced. Now I'm paranoid to even rely on it.

That other half is usually helpful.. depends on his schedule and mood. I'm the one that wanted to keep the fish, so therefore they are my problem. Oh well, I do enjoy them :)

It was pretty amusing trying to get the screws out of it last night, before it dawned on me I could easily remove it from the mount.

Kicking myself for trashing the aqualifter. At least I could have used it as a backup.

Now as long as the return pump doesn't break, I will be happy.
 
Let's call a spade a spade. These things are cheap pieces of crap. When, not if, but when, the new one blows, I'll be looking for higher end more stout and reliable alternatives. Either medical grade, or litermeter.
 
I've been prowling eBay looking at used medical peristaltic pumps (for feeding tubes, etc.) to use as a reliable dosing solution. There seems to be plenty in the sub $100 price point. I'm not sure if many reefkeepers have attempted using pumps like these, but I'll be doing some more research as time allows.
 
Funny you say that. I was seeing a patient the other day that was getting a tube feed. I spun his IV pole to get a look see at the small quiet pump that was running :rolleyes:.

I think with those, the limiting factor is the peristaltic tube, as opposed to the easily stripped gears of the BRS pumps. The medical grade pumps are bulkier, but nothing prohibitive.
 
Thanks for posting your experience with these pumps. BRS has them as their deal of the day today and I almost bought one. Even at $79.99 I think I'll save my money and look for something more reliable.
 
The ebay-market medical grade pumps used to be the only option before these cheap hobby grade items showed up. For me the real trick there was always understanding EXACTLY what you were buying. Just go look at the Cole Parmer website, there must be at least several hundred model numbers of pump heads and motors indicating different speeds, tubing materials, tubing diameters, controllability, etc. If you can take the time to figure this out and sit around and wait for a bargain I think this is definitely the way to go.
 
Well, one of mine just died. Time to look for something better. Waiting for the day that my other two (dosing ALK, Ca) go...
 
Bummer man. You take it apart and see what you're paying for? It's an eye opener. Can't be more than $5-10 worth of materials.

Was it under warranty?

My replacement pump (I paid 1/2 price thru BRS as it was out of warranty) squeals like a baby pig. I run it over night but you can hear it on the second floor if you're awake.

Overall very disappointing product. It's not like a good ole Maxijet. They are dirt cheap and bullet proof. These things are $99 and flimsy.
 
It blew one 366 days from purchase. Perfectly timed for warranty-flop. I was thinking of switching it to a maxijet. I already have the apex controlling these BRS ones. It'll be fine for the ATO, but I need to find something to use for the Alk/Ca dosing. Any ideas?
