Bryopsis still here (2,300 mag)

Been battling bryopsis for little over a month now with Kent Tech M.

I started at 1800 mag and recently raise it above the 2000 mark two weeks ago. Last week I raised it to 2,400. Just checked it tonight and it is at 2,325. I've only done ONE 3 gallon water change (30 gallon tank)

I went down from 4 t5 to 2 blue+ and one par bulb to shine on the anemone and gorgonians. Gorgonians having been holding up too well but the rbt, zoas and clove polyps seem to be hangin in there.

While the bryopsis seems to not be ferning out and in some cases growing stunted with thick tips, in high flow areas it seems to be thriving!

Any tips? See below for pics.

Mag wont help when other parameters show plenty of food in the water.

Water has to be extra clean before that will help if it does.

I haven't had any food in the tank in over a month and I did a very large water change prior to starting dosing. Do I need to keep doing water changes even if I'm not putting anything but mag in the system?

Whatever it is, the bleaching and lack of growth does sound like your making headway.
Phos can leach out of rocks for a long time, one month is nuthin.

What are your phos and nitrate levels?
Are you doing any nutrient removal like pulling out algae where you can and running gfo? [ETA: like reef frog said]

Tuxedo and longspine urchins eat it, so do lettuce nudibranchs. My tangs keep it gone once the weed is cropped down low.

i lost battles with bryopsis. recently took down my 210. gone through 3-4 gallons on tech -m @ 2400 it's a bummer to fight and i lost my battle. Starting fresh for me with a new tank soon.

I had my run in with Bryopsis in my 90 several years ago. After trying everything, lettuce nudi's finally got rid of it. There was no BS, they started to work on it immediately.

The pictures are fuzzy but are you sure it's bryopsis? I don't see the tell tale forks that bryopsis has. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct...cbn6zkC-Eu1mx-UMmsp5wR3Q&ust=1453009747419859

That was my first thought too. Doesn't look like bryopsis to me but there are a lot of different varieties of bryopsis. That said, Tech M at 2000 mg did the trick for me but my bryopsis looked completely different than that. After about a week it started to die off and within a month it was gone.

A lot of questions to answer so here I go! This stuff is RELENTLESS! It is even growing on my other macroalgae!

Reef Frog I would drive down nutrients,'especially phosphate any way you can. Are you running GFO?

No I am not. It is low tech and I just have a sump with bio balls and a nice thick layer of poly fiber.

I had it identified a while ago. It was very "branchy" before but since dosing the Tech M it has stopped branching, but still grows. I have about 60 dwarf cerith, 30 cerith, 2 turbos, 5 astrea 8 hermits and other snail specimens but they either don't touch it or work on it slowly.

Good to hear some positive. It is bleaching somewhat in other areas but in the high flow it is rampant. phos averages out around .009ppm (Hanna ULR) and nitrates show 0. No GFO. Pulling algae once or twice a week when I get a chance.

How do they react with RBT and other softies? I am just worried that my limited real estate will be an issue for those.

Where do you get these?

Here are some more photos. I tried to get a clear shot...

Looks like bryopsis that has gotten slimy and weak if that makes any sense; like you're having an affect on it.

Anyhow, I don't remember where I got the Lettuce Nudi's (it might have been my LFS) but I'm sure liveaquaria or someone is stocking them. I ended up having a ton of them because they reproduced like crazy with all of that algae to eat.

The only downside is that they tend to get in the overflow.

Well I spent a good many hours plucking the bryopsis and any other algae. I also found two glass anemones, one on a rock and another actually growing ON my clove polyps.. boiled the rock and cut the polyp out of the water. Bummer...

So far 3 days in and no exponential bryopsis growth.

I can officially say the bryopsis is completely gone... I lost a good bit of coral, two of my mangroves, a bunch of snails hell even the macro algae wasn't happy with 3,000 mag...... so I'm pretty depressed at how baron my tank is, but hopefully it is only up from here!

Radio pro came in. Thing is bad-***. Wish I would have gotten some/could afford them for my planted tank.

Magnesium helps keep alkalinity up. Which in turn, helps keep algae at bay. However, keeping your mag at 1700+ is only an algae deterrent if you use Kent magnesium, due to some other unknown additive it seems.

All that said, it's better to do high quality water changes, use a refuge, ATS, and/or skimmer. I would not rely on magnesium to rid a tank of algae.

Either keep less fish, feed less, or employ some sort of nutrient removal.

I'd venture to say that your mangroves and caulerpa are out competing the bryopis.
