I don't have a top off system. I really hope thats not going to make a difference in the performance of this skimmer. I have this skimmer in a standard 29 gallon aga tank using as a sump. I have the water level set at 8.25 inches. Why would the water flucuate in the skimmer if the water level well above the pump intake? The output of this skimmer is submerged under the water. I can't understand why the water level in the sump would make a difference.

When the water level in the sump goes up and down, it ads and removes head pressure on the NW pump causing fluctuations in the water level inside the skimmer. When the water level is high, there is more head, when it is low, there is less.

It happens with ALL internal skimmers. You must have a constant level in the sump or you will get really inconsistant results.... One of the reasons I prefer external/RC skimmers. Head pressure does not affect the funtion of the pump because it is on a closed loop.

Thanks for the explanation Jim. I believe I found the correct water sump level a few pages back. Klaus states it should be between 20-25 centimeters which is something like 7.5-9.5 inches. Mine is something like 8.25 so I should be okay.

I also noticed there is a little platic screw on the side of the wedge pipe I didn't notice it before which tightens up the wedge pipe from moving. Never used it maybe I should screw it down after adjusting it. Maybe the wedge pipe was loose, which also caused the water level to drop. Hmmmmmm

Here's my BK Mini 160:

Picture quality isn't that great, my camera sucks, but just wanted to say that the quality of construction of this skimmer is amazing !

One thing I'm not quite sure..is what does the water level limit tell me ?

I mean..should it be foam level limit ?

Where do you guys bubbles break ??

Oh and one last thing, I only have about 30 lbs of live rock in my tank right now and 1 little clown fish. So not much bioload I would guess, so not like I'm expecting the skimmer to collect much skimmate. It's a barebottom (BB) tank also.

Here's a pic or two :) :

The water level should be at black line from what I read. I am not getting much of anything and I had this running about 24 hours. I been feeding my tank real heavy since last tuesday when i took down my deltec skimmer so i do have lots of waste. I think my skimmer needs more break in time. I want to take apart the silencer and see how that thing works inside. According to Klaus its not glued and we can clean it.

Not quite sure what you mean by water level ? Do you mean your bubbles are breaking at that point ???

Mine seems to be working great, so far I have some really nice earl grey tea inside my collection cup with some crud ! And that's after around 2h of skimming.

Got to say, the water level in my sump is always constant and there's virtually no movement in the water..it's really still. I use a small maxijet once a week to disperse the crud that goes to the bottom of the sump.

No its were the actual water is in the skimmer not the bubbles breaking. I think I am going to add some baffles in my sump maybe that might help with the skimmer.

I have found my 160 works best when the water level is actually a bit above the black line. I have been running the water level right at the seam where the cup sets on the body, and have been pulling out some really nasty gunk. I would recommend raising your water level just a bit.

I would think the same think Jeremy, the water level line is too low..I think. I have my water level now to a little bit over the seam where cup sets on the body. The bubbles are breaking right at the hole for the cup. Gonna have to play a little with it.

For those wondering, the BK Mini 160 is silent. It makes a small kind of whistling sound..but other then that..it's pretty silent.

Also, another sweet thing is that it produces absolutely no microbubbles !!! :D

Happy about that, because my return pump is inches from the output of the BK :)

This is pretty much my experience also, although you will get slightly drier skimmate with the level at the black line.

Thanks guys!! When i get home from work i will adjust it by raising it a little. Would you say a half inch above the line for starters?
