Building a stand.

Sure you can use standard dimensional lumber. It will be serious overkill for a tank that size, but it is also the most forgiving of the choices you could use if your carpentry skills are not the best.

Do a google search for the Rocket Engineer stand template for a easy to follow diagram. I would suggest topping it with a piece of 3/4" plywood just to level out the top.
 
Answer depends on how its built and heavily dictated by your "skills"...
Also depends on how you want it to look..

One absolutely does NOT need to use "studs" at all to build a strong stand..
My stand for my 80G tank is built using 3/4" plywood only..
Studs take up so much room and are not needed in any stand really..

But as stated.. Sometimes when you lack the skills you overbuild,etc...
